This article seems to suggest that the 30 day Gratitude Prayer approach can help in receiving and properly evaluating ‘promptings’.

1. Express gratitude for the multitudes of His tender mercies.

2. Express faith and gratitude for all He’s about to do.

3. Seek guidance for anything different He needs the individual to do or change.

The Prophet Samuel was instructed by the Lord to annoint Saul to be king over Israel and we know how that turned out.  However, I don’t think because a prompting “goes wrong” (as it did in the example given in the article) that it was the wrong thing to do when it was received. Afterall, we cannot see the end of all things.

But the bigger point remains, prompting aside: are we being obedient, are we being faithful, are we seeking His face?  Are we asking ourselves the difficult questions of is this in line with our Father’s will, is it what’s best for myself and my family? Our Father cannot bless our undertakings if we are not living inside His will (something I’ve found out for myself).

Further, if we do feel led (prompted) are we seeking confirmation from Him and other more mature Christians;  especially with live changing decisions such as marriage, divorce, and careers?
