I am teaching a lesson on the purpose of life...

I recall a quote that I once heard regarding this last dispensation. That once we pass away, when others realize we are from the last dispensation, they will grow silent. They will be in awe of what we had to do.

This is the basic idea of the quote but I wanted to get the exact wording and source...please help!!! :)

Letter from the First Presidency
Regarding the Passing of "Statements
Attributed to Church Leaders"

The letter was issued on May 13, 2004 and addressed the all Church units and LDS Church leaders. Its subject was: Statements Attributed to Church Leaders. The contents stated:

From time to time statements are circulated among members which are inaccurately attributed to the leaders of the Church. Many such statements distort current Church teachings and are often based on rumors and innuendos. They are never transmitted officially, but by word of mouth, e-mail, or other informal means.
We encourage members of the Church to never teach or pass on such statements without verifying that they are from approved Church sources, such as official statements, communications, and publications. Any notes made when General Authorities, Area Authority Seventies, or other general Church officers speak at regional and stake conferences or other meetings should not be distributed without the consent of the speaker. Personal notes are for individual use only.
True spiritual growth is based on studying the scriptures, the teachings of the Brethren, and Church publications.

The letter was signed by the First Presidency. As such, this should be sufficient instruction for faithful members of the Church to not pass around material that does not have official Church sanction.

Youth were Generals in the War in Heaven

A quotation has been circulated widely, usually attributed to Pres. Boyd K. Packer but also to Pres. Monson, Elder Eyring, Elder Maxwell, and others. The quotation says that today's youth were "generals in the War in Heaven" and in some future day will be worshipped by other eternal souls who will fall to a hush when they hear that the youth lived in the time of Gordon B. Hinckley.

  • None of the general authorities is the source of this quote. It was NOT given by Pres. Packer in a temple prayer meeting, or in any other meeting. It was NOT given by any of the other leaders it is attributed to. The original version of this statement originated with an instructor in an "Especially for Youth" class; but the statement has gradually been changed from its original form.

Update:The following statement was published in the Church News, an official publication of the Church, on April 28, 2001: President Boyd K. Packer, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve, has released the following concerning a statement he is said to have made:

"We continue to receive reports of the distribution of a quote attributed to me which begins, 'The youth of the Church today were generals in the war in heaven,' and ends with the statement that when they return to heaven 'all in attendance will bow in your presence.'

"I did not make that statement. I do not believe that statement.

"The statement, on occasion, has been attributed to others of the First Presidency and the Twelve. None of the Brethren made that statement."

President Packer has sent a letter to mission presidents requesting their help in clarifying this matter among missionaries and members, and has had posted on some Internet sites carrying the statement a notice that he did not make this declaration.

I remember this clearly. It was attributed to authorities (Neal Maxwell? I was told it was Gordon Hinkley! lol), and from what I understood it was made by some random guest speaker at an Especially For Youth Summer program held at BYU. But that could be totally false too.

In any case, I felt it was a bad quote personally. I can't recall the specific words to Google it but I would strongly advise you not to use it. We do have many real ones talking about how this generation is or will have to be the strongest yet or something to that effect. Good luck!
