  1. And just to get specific, he wasn't white like a european, but more likely olive skined like the rest of the people in the area... More of a middle eastern kinda guy.
  2. I STRONGLY disagree with the death penalty. It's the 1 punishment that can never be revoked no matter what. How many people have been killed only to be post-mortum released from all charges? I have NO idea about this specific case, and for all I know he could have been found with the gas can in his hand. That's great, throw him in prison till the end of time with no option for parole ever, it's cheaper then our current methods of execution to keep them in prison for life then. I have never seen a good enough reason to support the death penalty. Wrongful execution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Death penalty as a deterance doesn't work- http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/DonohueDeter.pdf Why would I support it? If he is guilty his crime is horrendus, but why should we justify killing someone, because they killed someone?
  3. Just wanted to throw in really quick- This thread is not meant to be a debate on the church's stance on homosexuality, I was asking a question to people individually. If you would like to debate the church's stance please do so in a different thread so this one is not closed. Thanks
  4. Growing up in the LDS church the only thing I was EVER taught was that the church had no official position on evolution, because it had nothing to do with salvation. I personally know people in the church that fully accept evolution, and that fully reject evolution. That is my only say in the LDS vs. Evolution thing, but I feel a few other things need clarifed (non-religious). There is no debate in the scientific comunity as to whether or not our current dating models work. We have multiple dating methods and we get the same results (or extremely close) using multiple methods. Just because 1 man who worked in explosives believes they are incorrect does not actually make it so. You should read up on dating methods. I'll even link them for you: Radiometric Dating and the Geological Time Scale Isochron Dating The Decay of c-decay Or for a really wide view start reading here: The Talk.Origins Archive: The Age of the Earth FAQs They misled the people bing interviewed... Personally, I thought the movie was rediculous... Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Reaction to Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Really? Gaping holes? Please tell me about them. And even the most outspoken atheist/biologist (Richard Dawkins), states that it is highly unlikely that the judeo christian god exists... most scientists are not strong athiests in their freetime... I love how people bring up that evolution (especially macro evolution) is not a FACT. You may want to look up "Scientific theory" and compare that deffinition to "theory" they are quite different. Gravity? Just a theory.
  5. I appologize in advance because I did not read the entire thread, but I just wanted to throw in my input. In my family the people that have left the church have done it based on the basis of the religion itself. We found theological problems with the LDS church and christianity in general. So I disagree with the quote, but hey, to each his own :).
  6. I did have a long drawn out response, but I'm trying to keep the debate out of this thread... Anyway, thanks for your input.
  7. But... on a societal level, everytime a group of people has been given equal rights it has been for the better. Women equal rights, African-American equal rights, why do you assume that homosexuals having equal rights will be a bad thing? I'm talking on a societal level of course.
  8. I'll debate with you if you want. As long as it's something cool I.E. Ninja turtles vs. GI Joes, who would win? Anyways, welcome!
  9. I don't really have much to add... lol, but I do date LDS girls on occasion I'd agree with what everyone is saying here though, dating someone of another faith (or non-faith) is fun, but if it gets too serious it can lead to a lot of problems, so I always keep it light in those relationships.
  10. Welcome welcome!
  11. :lol::animatedlol::roflmbo: I'm changing my family photo
  12. Lol, I'll take it, what type of classes am I looking at?
  13. Hey Tom, I realize that this is an older thread, but I just wanted to give you an e-pat-on-the-back for the way you handled her telling you her feelings. My own "coming out" to my parents did not go so well, and neither did most friends that have chosen the same path. Anyway, great parenting skills! And that is all... lol
  14. "The love of a family is life's greatest blessing." Don't know who said it though... but its one of my fav's, underneath the family photo right now
  15. Lol, thank you I tried writing a sentace to clarify what you are saying, but I couldn't make it not sound rude lol, so I gave up.
  16. I am extremely familiar with both the BOM and bible. I'm looking for peoples PERSONAL reasons for voting against homosexuality rights while the LDS church has a more "live and let live" type approach (sp?) to most worldly topics (I hope that makes sense...) ^sorry if that sounds offensive, trying to simplify the question. If you have a more appropriate way to write it out I will happily edit.
  17. Thank you, that is exactly the type of response I was looking for. Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with it, but I've said that I wont argue in this thread and so I won't . But seriously, great response.
  18. hahaha, dang it, I'll take my shinanigans elsewhere
  19. Hi all! I was born and raised in the church (no longer a member) and I'm a little confused on my parents opinions. I really don't want a debate, I'm looking for peoples personal beliefs and the reasoning behind them! So my problem is- The LDS church teaches that we are all here to be tried, we all have free agency to do as we wish, but we do have to live with those consequences. The 11th article of faith states- I realize they are talking specifically about religion, but I figure it would work for all major decisions in life. Okay, so in my family in every election they always vote to ban gay marriage, or to outlaw gay rights. What do you (members of the LDS church) vote, and how do you justify either your decision? Just for the record, I am not myself homosexual, I have a fantastic girlfriend that I'm crazy about, but I am EXTREMELY libertarian and it really bugs me that the church teaches so much acceptance, love, and freedom of choice, but the members vote to ban anything they don't agree with... Is this just because I live in Idaho, or is this how the majority of LDS people believe? Sorry for the rambling
  20. Hi all, I go by Redbeard and I'm a ex-LDSer that enjoys religions of all sorts, I'm very light hearted and I have a ton of LDS friends and family that I go back and forth with on the topic of religion. I hope that I can add to the conversations here without offending too many of you good folk Edit- Please feel free to ask about my godless ways, I'm good for insight if you are trying to understand why friends or family are struggling. I will try to be as un-"preachy" as possible. Out of all religions I respect the LDS church the most (I don't consider buddhism a religion, otherwise it would take tops ), I realize why people choose the LDS church and I will try my hardest to not test anyones faith.
