  1. You know, it depends on where the Subway is at.

I hated Subway for years, especially in the South. Didn't taste good, skimpy on portions, etc.

Then I moved up here to the Buffalo area, and had to go to one in a pinch for a quick lunch. It was very good. Whether their menu had changed or just the scenery, I grew to like them.

However up here in Buffalo there are still better sandwich shops, especially if you like Meatball subs. OMGosh, there are some FABULOUS places to eat up here, particularly if you love Italian and/or Buffalo Wings! (and in some places, you can get both!)

Sixpack, I didn't know you had lived in the South. I'm from the South and I HATE Subway. When they first opened when I was in high school, they were really good with fresh meat and tons of tasty toppings. Now you get like one thin layer of nasty formed meat-like-stuff. I just saw a commercial and told my husband that I wish they were still tasty bc they have good choices like yogurt or fruit for a side and that would be a good lunch on a workday or dinner on a crazy evening. Now Jersey Mike's has some SUBS!

My grandparents lived in Buffalo and I spent every summer vacation there. You're right about the good places to eat up there. I remember a drug store on the street behind my grandparents' house that had the BEST subs for like $2 for a footlong - piled high with real turkey and provolone and 3 inches of toppings, and dripping with italian dressing. Maybe Subway has to increase their quality up there in order to stay in the game. They have to compete with those wings and 'beef on weck'! And $5 pizzas almost as big as the table! (OK, so it was just a FEW years ago that I hung out up there! ;) ) And I would always come home about 10 lbs heavier!

Back to the topic, we've had Subway in our Walmart for a couple years, I think. I don't like to go there either though. No, I'm not a 'too good for Walmart' snob... just don't like the way they treat employees or the way the crazed customers run over you with their carts, trying to get to the gallon size tub of margarine on sale for $0.50.

  2. So, my husband and I are watching a show on Discovery right now about cloning. We started talking about the whole soul thing. What do you guys think about it?

First of all, can we assume that it's possible to clone a human being? Animals have been cloned by now, so I think it's possible to do the same with humans.

If I make a clone of myself, would me and my clone have the same soul? Or would it be a different person with a different soul? Strange to think about...

  3. i think that there are a couple around Indy, but what i enjoy are teh drive in resturants, the pre-cursors to "sonic" and the like...but the ones that aint that fancy, there is a place called "Dog and Suds" they make thier own root beer, and my favorite is called "earl's", had been "busters" for years but Buster retired and sold it to earl (who appears to be about 90 himself) but this place looks strait outta the 50's you pull up, a girl comes out and takes your order, you order off of the hand painted sign on the side of the bulding, and their trademark item is a tenderloin sandwich almost the size of a dinner plate and about half an inch thick....for $4.75

    good stuff

That's exactly the kind of places I like, Jaime. They take me back to my childhood... not that I was a child in the 50's! :P But the 70's.

Umm, tenderloin sandwich. There's a place in Mt. Airy, NC - or Mayberry according to The Andy Griffith Show - called Snappy Lunch that specializes in Tenderloin sandwiches... the same Snappy lunch and tenderloin sandwich that Andy and Barney talk about in their show. Here's an interesting link: http://www.visitmayberry.com/detailsnorthc...sCategoryID=374

We have one in the SLC area. Currently it has 5 screens. We try to go when we can. You can even bbq there and you can find many people with a complete spread of food while enjoying the movie.

    I haven't been there for YEARS....BBQ's? Wow. :D

    http://www.drive-ins.com/theater/uttredw

That does sound great to have a BBQ at a drive-in. The one here doesn't allow you to bring in your own food because that eats into their profits, so you have to stick with the hamburgers or hotdogs under the red light. Not the best, but definitely nostalgic!

    Five screens? Wow!

Now to switch to eateries... do you guys ever watch Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives' on Food Network? It's an interesting show and a lot of the restaurants they go to are the retro diners. I live in Raleigh, but Charlotte which is a couple hours away has a lot of places like this... we have just a few, like Char Grill http://www.choppedonion.com/id37.html

  5. Do you guys have a drive-in theater in your town? We have one about 30 mins away... had another that closed down recently. Here's the website for the one still open, showing pics that will take you back if you're my age or older: http://raleighroaddrivein.com/_wsn/page9.html

When I was a child, my mom and a few of her friends would go and take us kids. We would take chairs and sit outside to watch the movie. For intermission we'd go in and buy hotdogs and french fries in cups that they kept under a red light to keep them warm. They'd stay for the double feature and we'd always fall asleep in the car. Good times!

I wanted to go tonight, but they aren't playing anything that's family-oriented... plus it's raining for the first time in two months or so... YAY!

What are some other retro places that you guys like to go to... if any?

I'm all into the retro thing, especially food places. Here's a neat page that lets you look up these places in your state: http://www.agilitynut.com/roadside.html

Maybe it will help you find something fun to do this weekend! :)

  6. 2 : an admission of error or discourtesy accompanied by an expression of regret

    3 : a poor substitute : MAKESHIFT

Well, what am I to think now?

I am still bother by Tuttle's insistence: "We don't use the word 'apology.' We used 'profound regret."

Did the church authority in question also admit to error along with expressing regret? Because the way the definition is worded, both elements must be there; hence, "accompanied by".
  7. Shantress,

As such a woman, why do you think Christ did not agree with you historically and that to date has not, at minimum, agreed with you enough to act on it?

Do you suppose that in the future God might agree with you more?

I'm one of those who doesn't agree with everything in the Bible. I have a hard time believing that everyone (mostly men) that has had a part in writing/translating the Bible have been honest. As we all know, everyone is imperfect and sometimes people have their own agendas.

I think there so little that we know about any of this stuff.

  8. There are several here whose posts are really enjoy: You, Pale Rider, Prison Chaplain, Snow, Shanstress, Traveler, even Jason, with whom I disagree most of the time, to name a few.

Thanks! I enjoy your posts too. It's one thing to disagree, but we should be able to discuss them without insulting each other or take offense too easily... otherwise, why are you coming to a forum such as this?

    <div class='quotemain'>

Nope, but I wouldn't hold your breath. That would make women vastly superior to us men, and they would no longer have any use for us...:)

We already are vastly superior to you men. You go right ahead and carry a child inside your body and then give birth to said child. If men had that capability there would be far fewer children in the world because men can not tolerate pain like women can. Men can in no way multi task with the skill, accuracy and speed that women do naturally. There is no way Man alone will enter into the Celestial Kingdom - he HAS to be sealed to his wife.

In my opinion if man are not walking in tandem with their wife then they are not in a righteous union.

And here is the underlying problem, isn't it? Women are superior to men, or at least I hear this crap rolled out every once in a while. 'If men had to give birth, the species would have died off' like women have done something so wonderful that only they can do. Give me a flippin' break! As for tolerating pain: men, how often have you cut yourself badly while working on the car, playing a sport, working on the house, etc., sucked on it a little so that you wouldn't get blood everywhere and then gone on with what you were doing? How many women can do that? I have 3 girls, all of whom I did the 'manly' things with, and they were out of commission. Period. So don't throw that old feminist crap out as if it were fact. Because it ain't.

As for multi-tasking, yes, men do a wonderful job of that. We are forced to in our jobs.

Just for the record, as one of the women who thinks that women should share the priesthood in any church, I do not think women are superior to men. I think we are of equal importance, but that there are things women can do better than men and vice versa. I just happen to think women do a good job in positions of religious leadership, as I've been to a few churches who have them.

I think one of the things women are not cut out for is war. They do not have the physical strength that men have, in general, and may put men in jeopardy in the battlefield when men feel they need to protect the women there.

I think one of the things men would not do as well as women is early childhood development (working in a daycare). My husband stayed home with our child until he was three, but it was a challenge for him to take care of one all day... no way he could take care of a class full of them and give them the care and nurturing they need.

I too tire of hearing the 'superior' thing coming from women. Why can't 'as good as' be enough?

  10. Yeah, I've heard about the polar bears' struggle. :( Do you know what people can do to help save them? Our local zoo is building a new arctic exhibit that will include polar bears (which we haven't had for decades). I look forward to being able to see them, but I hope they can survive in the wild, too. It's really sad when a species survives only in captivity, but I suppose that's better than not at all.

Well, I guess it all depends on whether or not you believe that global warming is being caused by humans. If you believe it is then according to some, there are things that we can do as a society to reduce or slow global warming. Global warming is the reason their ice is melting, causing them to not be able to find food.

I tend to believe that global warming is cyclical and that humans aren't causing it. I learned a lot about these 18,000 year cold/hot cycles in some weather and climate classes I took in college and that makes the most sense to me.

However, I can't be sure that I'm correct since no one can really prove it one way or the other. So my family does what we can for the effort... just in case we can help. Things like recycling, biking instead of driving a car when possible, conserving water and energy, buying brands with less packaging material, supporting local agriculture, not supporting corporations who don't do their part, etc. You know the drill.

  11. Extremely surprised! I wonder if these guys are still active members, or if it's something they did as an act of rebellion after leaving the church? If they are still members, what do the church authorities think of it? What would they think of women who did the same thing?

A pleasant way to begin my morning though!

  12. I think what you're trying to do is very commendable, as it's obvious you really care about this woman and her children. However, I agree with SF that it would be a mistake to bring them into your home. Try to help her be self sufficient. Why would you raise money to add to your house? If you're going to raise money, it should be so that she can get back on her feet again independently.

  13. I can't speak for anyone else, of course, but when I was LDS I wouldn't have felt comfortable saying that I had a problem with women not holding the priesthood. I dare say there are women who wouldn't voice their opinion on this. To do so is saying that you don't believe the prophet is 'of God', which would basically be apostasy.

Just saying that your poll results may not be very accurate.

Edited to add the word NOT, which was necessary to make my point. Also, I would say that most happy, active LDS women don't have a problem with it. It's the ones who are questioning certain issues... and I know there are many of those questioning women because I know some personally.

  14. ChicagoGuy: You seem to have crossed paths with some anti-mormon material. Reading the LDS Church History and making yourself knowledgeable of the Church doctrine is always the keys to understanding, developing a testimony and strengthening your faith. There are many scriptures which talk about false teachings (anti-mormon...etc.).

Which is more important to you? The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints or the words against it?

When someone reads about some contradictions in the LDS church and ends up formulating questions after reading them, that doesn't necessarily mean that person had been reading 'anti' material. One could read actual church history and formulate questions such as Chicagoguys. It is possible that he's been reading anti material, but not a given.
  15. Seeing the Priesthood through the eyes of a child:

When my child was about six years old, he was invited to go somewhere with his buddy and his friend's father. My son said something to the effect that they were going to have to be good because his dad was a man.

I asked him "what is the difference between a mommy and a daddy?" He said "a mommy is like a kid and a daddy is all grown up."

I think that he was seeing how women are very good at short term goals and that men are very good with long term goals. I do not think it had to do with maturity.

A mother would provide for him as he needed it but his father would take him to the Celestial Kingdom.

The short term goals of women contribute to the long term goals of men.

Do my sons hold the Priesthood, yes. Do I, No. Their relationship with the Lord is much different than mine.

Wow Annabelli, once again I must be living in different universe than you. If my child was asked who's more like the adult and who's more like the child, it would definitely be the other way around in my house. It's not my intention to say anything negative about my dearest husband, but I am the one who begs and pleads for them to stop playing the Wii and come eat dinner, I'm the one who declares 'clean-up time' with whines from both of them, I'm the one who tells them to come in from the garage bc it's time to go 'where ever'. I'm also the one who takes my child to church and prays with him every night. I plan for my child's education by choosing the best schools to try to get him into next year when he starts Kindergarten. Both my husband and I earn the money and plan and save for our retirement. Several long-term goals mixed in there!

I understand that what you said may be true for you, but please understand that your situation is not typical of most women.

  16. <div class='quotemain'>

I apologize for my ugly comment.

And I apologize for being ugly.

We use that term in the South for being not-so-nice. My mom would tell me, "Don't be ugly", but it had nothing to do with my appearance. Do you guys from other areas do that, or is it a true southern thang?
