1 Nephi 2:24

21 And inasmuch as thy brethren shall rebel against thee, they shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord.

22 And inasmuch as thou shalt keep my commandments, thou shalt be made a ruler and a teacher over thy brethren.

23 For behold, in that day that they shall rebel against me, I will curse them even with a sore curse, and they shall have no power over thy seed except they shall rebel against me also.

--

24 And if it so be that they rebel against me, they shall be a scourge unto thy seed, to stir them up in the ways of remembrance.

QUOTES FOR DISCUSSION

[The Lamanites] were not the Nephite problem. They were merely kept there to remind the Nephites of their real problem, which was to walk uprightly before the Lord.

This should have been a very prevalent thought for the Nephites. Their ancestors first escaped Egypt. Later, many were carried off by the Assyrians, with just a few escaping to Jerusalem. Then, their father Lehi became a prophet of doom to the Jews, telling them to repent or be destroyed.

Here the evidence is visible that the blessings and curses given by Moses in Deuteronomy were still applicable. Follow the living prophets that God has ordained, repent of your sins, and you will prosper. Otherwise, you will fall to your enemies by natural causes.

We should remember the reality brought to our attention by Hugh Nibley as we consider the relatively tiny affliction we suffer as members of the Church today. For as we fail to take notice and act accordingly, those afflictions will act as the voice of God speaking louder and louder until we do.
