THE FOUR ANGELS

8 Q. What are we to understand by the four angels, spoken of in the 7th chapter and 1st verse of Revelation?

A. We are to understand that they are four angels sent forth from God, to whom is given power over the four parts of the earth, to save life and to destroy; these are they who have the everlasting gospel to commit to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people; having power to shut up the heavens, to seal up unto life, or to cast down to the regions of darkness.

9 Q. What are we to understand by the angel ascending from the east, Revelation 7th chapter and 2nd verse?

A. We are to understand that the angel ascending from the east is he to whom is given the seal of the living God over the twelve tribes of Israel; wherefore, he crieth unto the four angels having the everlasting gospel, saying: Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And, if you will receive it, this is Elias which was to come to gather together the tribes of Israel and restore all things. D&C 77

Revelation Chapter 9

13 ¶ And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,

14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.

15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.

16 And the number of the army of the horsemen [were] two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.

17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses [were] as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.

18 By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.

19 For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails [were] like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.

20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:

21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

TO DESTROY

Closely akin to reaping is the function of destroying. To some angels is given power to hurt the earth: "And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth" (Revelation 7:2).

One means of preparing men for the truth is to humble them through affliction. Human nature has not changed much since the confrontation between Moses and Pharaoh when the Lord said, "How long wilt thou refuse to humble thyself before me? let my people go, that they may serve me" (Exodus 10:3). The terrible consequences of this confrontation are chronicled in the book of Exodus (see Exodus 7-12).

Since that awful time millions of people annually practice the rite of the Passover. "For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn . . . I will execute judgment: I am the Lord" (Exodus 12:12). The one with power to save has power to destroy. "There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy" (James 4:12). The scriptures have since referred to this incident as a time the destroying angel passed by the children of Israel, and in our day, contingent upon our keeping God's commandments, we are told: "And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them" (D&C 89:21).

Luke, in the Acts of the Apostles, records an incident of a destroying angel. "And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost" (Acts 12:23).

The Angel of the East

The Apostle John saw another angel ascending from the east who is given the seal of the living God over the twelve patriarchal tribes of Israel. This means, no doubt, that he is given the responsibility of seeing to it that all of the righteous, who are to inherit the celestial kingdom of glory as a place of eternal existence subsequent to mortality, will be numbered among the twelve tribes of the house of Israel, which is the house of God. This is to be accomplished by the power of patriarchal sealing. John saw, then, the four angels, given assignment to supervise the proclaiming of the gospel in the four corners of the earth, with power to destroy the wicked who heed not the call of the servants of God upon the earth, who proclaim the everlasting gospel. The angel from the east attends to the sealing-up of the righteous, and works with the four angels that their destructions do not prematurely destroy the potential righteous with the wicked. He shall say unto them: "Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads." Who Am I?, by Alvin R. Dyer

Because God has given the keys of the everlasting Gospel to the fifth angel, let no one suppose that he alone will act in the great latter-day dispensation. Other angels have their missions to perform, and will assist in the wonderful work. We again quote from the revelations given to that great Prophet Joseph Smith, taken from his inspired key to John's vision on Patmos. The Prophet inquires as follows:

"What are we to understand by the four angels spoken of in the seventh chapter and first verse of the Revelation?" He answers: "We are to understand that they are four angels sent forth from God, to whom is given power over the four parts of the earth, to save life and to destroy; these are they who have the everlasting Gospel, to commit to every nation, kindred, tongue and people; having power to shut up the heavens, to seal up unto life, or to cast down to the regions of darkness." (Pearl of Great Price, p. 34.)

"Await that time destroyers four, who give

The Gospel, God's last warning unto man;

Await likewise the thousands, twelve times twelve,

Who for the coming King the way prepare.

Hold I the signet of the Living God—

Lift unto light, or hurl to darkness down.

The hour is imminent. Heed well the sign:

Mark when the Bow's bright promise is withdrawn!"

A. 7:1 after these things. After the events recorded in Rev. 6.

I saw four angels. In his vision, John sees "four destroying angels holding power over the four quarters of the earth," who are "sent forth from God, to whom is given power over the four parts of the earth, to save life and to destroy; these are they who have the everlasting gospel to commit to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people; having power to shut up the heavens, to seal up unto life, or to cast down to the regions of darkness" (D&C 77:8).

These angels are those who in 1831 were "waiting the great command to reap down the earth, to gather the tares that they may be burned" (D&C 38:12). Joseph Fielding Smith wrote that these four angels "seem to fit the description of the angels spoken of in the parable of the wheat and the tares (Matt. 13:24-43; and D&C 86:1-7) who plead with the Lord that they might go forth to reap down the field. They were told to let the wheat and the tares grow together to the time of the end of the harvest, which is the end of the world (Matt. 13:38-39). . . . These are now at work in the earth on their sacred mission."

Wilford Woodruff confirmed that the four angels are now at work: "Those angels have left the portals of heaven, and they stand over this people and this nation now, and are hovering over the earth waiting to pour out the judgments. And from this very day they shall be poured out."

standing on the four corners of the earth. This phrase seems to indicate that the four angels have power and authority ("standing" shows ascendancy or control; 10:2, 5) over the entire earth ("four corners of the earth" means the whole earth).

holding the four winds of the earth. The four winds originate from God, who uses them to scatter and destroy people and nations (Jer. 49:35-36; Zech. 2:6; Dan. 7:2; 11:4). The four winds are also sometimes connected with gathering peoples from all parts of the world (Matt. 24:31; D&C 133:7; JS 1:37). Here and in the following two verses the four winds are equated with damaging the earth, sea, and trees. God empowers the four angels to hold back the four winds, which appear to be metaphors of destruction, until his mortal servants are protected and sealed against the coming tribulations (Ezek. 9:4-6; see commentary on 7:2). Elsewhere, the book of Revelation makes it evident that angels are given control of the elements: in 14:18 and 16:5 we read of the angel "which had power over fire" and "the angel of the waters."

wind should not blow on the earth/sea/tree. It is unclear whether this expression refers to the actual destruction of land and waters (through natural disasters) or to the destruction of a portion of humankind (also through natural disasters), with the earth, sea, and trees being symbols of humanity.

2 another angel ascending from the east. "The angel ascending from the east is he to whom is given the seal of the living God over the twelve tribes of Israel; wherefore, he crieth unto the four angels having the ever-lasting gospel, saying: Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And, if you will receive it, this is Elias which was to come to gather together the tribes of Israel and restore all things. . . .Understanding the Book of Revelation by Jay A. Parry, Donald W. Question eight: "What are we to understand by the four angels spoken of in the 7th chapter and 1st verse of Revelation?"

Answer: "We are to understand that they are four angels sent forth from God, to whom is given power over the four parts of the earth, to save life and to destroy; these are they who have the everlasting gospel to commit to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people; having power to shut up the heavens, to seal up unto life, or to cast down to the regions of darkness."

These angels seem to fit the description of the angels spoken of in the parable of the wheat and the tares, (Matt. 13:24-43 and D. & C. 86:17), who plead with the Lord that they might go forth to reap down the field. They were told to let the wheat and the tares grow together to the time of the end of the harvest, which is the end of the world (Matt. 13:38-39). There are some very interesting prophetic discourses on this by President Wilford Woodruff, delivered on several occasions shortly before his death, in which he proclaimed by revelation that the time had now come when these angels had been loosed and sent on their mission. A portion of his remarks follow:

"What are the signs of the time? Do the Latter-day Saints comprehend them? This is a fast age. The Lord is going to cut his work short in righteousness. Read these revelations, for they contain the history of what is going to pass in the earth. The Lord said to Joseph Smith in the beginning of this Church," (he then quoted verses 5-7 of Sec. 86and then continued), "What is the matter with the world today? What has created this change that we see coming over the world? Why these terrible judgments? What is the meaning of all these mighty events that are taking place? The meaning is, these angels that have been held for many years in the temple of our God have got their liberty to go out and commence their mission and their work in the earth, and they are here today in the earth. I feel bold in saying this to the Latter-day Saints. There is a meaning in these judgments. The word of the Lord cannot fall unfulfilled. If you want to know what is coming to pass, read the revelations of St. John; read the Book of Mormon and the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, and these things are at our doors. What is the matter with this nation? Thousand of men striking, mobs rising up and destroying property, and tribulation prevailing! I want to say that you will all find before you are many years older that Utah is a pretty good place to live in.

"So far as temporal matters are concerned, we have got to work and provide for ourselves. The day will come when, as we have been told, we shall all see the necessity of making our own shoes and clothing and raising our own food, and uniting together to carry out the purposes of the Lord. We will be preserved in the mountains of Israel in the day of God's judgment. I therefore say to you, my brethren and sisters, prepare for that which is to come." (M.S. 56:643-644.)

These angels have been given power over the four parts of the earth and they have the power of committing the everlasting Gospel to the peoples of the earth. The fulness of the Gospel was not restored by any one messenger sent from the presence of the Lord. All the ancient prophets who held keys and came and restored them, had a hand in this great work of restoration. There are, we learn from this revelation, four angels unto whom the power has been given, to shut up the heavens, to open them and with power unto life and also unto death and destruction. These are now at work in the earth on their sacred mission.

Question nine: "What are we to understand by the angel ascending from the east. Revelation 7th chapter and 2nd verse?"

Answer: "We are to understand that the angel ascending from the east is he to whom is given the seal of the living God over the twelve tribes of Israel; wherefore, he crieth unto the four angels having the everlasting Gospel, saying: Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. And, if you will receive it, this is Elias which was to come to gather together the tribes of Israel and restore all things."

As previously stated, the restoration of the Gospel did not come through just one messenger, but there are several who came and bestowed their keys of authority and power. The name Elias, is a title. This we have been taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith. (Teachings, p. 355.) Is it not possible, therefore, since so many ancient prophets had a hand in the restoration, that in speaking of the Elias who was to come and restore all things, do we not have a composite picture of several Eliases, rather than one single individual? The angel with the seal directs the four angels holding the destiny of the world in their hands, not to hurt the earth until the servants of the Lord have been sealed. This could not be accomplished until the Gospel was restored and proclaimed to the nations of the earth. Church History and Modern Revelation, vol. 2, by Joseph Fielding Smith

This happened on Sunday:

"...then last night, I woke up in receiving further guidance on the four-angels [D&C 77:8-11] on how the earth was to be divided between the four. It was given as the first destroyer will receive Europe and Africa. The second will receive the Americas. The third will receive the Pacific and the fourth will receive Asia to the middle-east. This was repeated over and over until I woke up. This was strange I thought with the repeatedness. It reminds me of Moroni dealing with Joseph Smith in rehearsement of three times on the same matter."

Four riders or angels are not what you think. Something I have to come to learn...they were or still are living among us for a short duration.

I have to revise this statement to restate - only one remains with us today. When this individual is called home, I believe the calamities will begin no sooner after his death. We are living on borrow time. ;)
