Elphaba Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 Listen to our leaders American Prophecy - 3I’m only going to address George Washington’s “visions,“ from your link. Because it is a hoax.Washington never saw this vision, as it was created by Charles W. Alexander, a Philadelphia journalist who in 1865 began publication of The Soldier’s Casket, a periodical for Union veterans of the Civil War. Writing under the pseudonym “Wesley Bradshaw,” Alexander authored several “vision” or “dream” pieces featuring historic American figures, including George Washington, George McClellan, Abraham Lincoln, and Ulysses S. Grant, which were advertised for sale in the pages of The Soldier’s Casket, with the separation between Alexander and the pseudonymous Bradshaw allowing the former to unashamedly laud the latter. (Although an officer named Antony Sherman did serve in the Continental Army, he wasn’t with Washington’s forces at Valley Forge during the winter of 1777-78, and it’s like mere coincidences that Alexander chose the appellation for the name of his fictitious narrator. The tale of Washington’s praying to God in secret for aid and comfort during the darkest days of the American Revolution, and being visited by an angel who revealed to him a vision of the United States victorious gained renewed currency in 2001 among Americans in need of booster shots of patriotism after the events of September 11. In its expression of the theme that America can never be conquered by external enemies, but can only be brought down through the failings of its own citizens, this piece is reminiscent of thoughts delivered for real by a revered American historical figure: Abraham Lincoln’s address before the Young Men’s Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois, on January 27, 1838.Again, the entire section in your link on George Washington never happened, so you need to not represent it as if it had You should also verify the other links to people’s vision is accurate.Elphaba Quote

bytor2112 Posted February 23, 2009 Report Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) Continually denying Bush is to blame for this crisis is obtuse. Of course it’s not all his fault, nothing ever is. But what is true is that his economic polices exacerbated the problems he inherited, of puny proportion compared to what he’s left Obama. And many, many people warned him of this, but as was usual for him, he refused to listen.Who warned who? Let's get acquainted with the facts, shall we.......You may recall....that in 2001 Bush warned that Freddie and Fannie were to large and way over leveraged? He warned that if they were to fail that the failure would wreck the capital markets and go far beyond housing. Bush fought for more regulation of Fannie and Freddie, he wanted to raise there capital requirements and limit the size of their portfolios. The Bush reforms were not passed....until 2008. You may also recall, that Sen. Chris Dodd, Dempcrat from Conn. successfully threatened a filibuster and called the reforms "ill-advised". In 2008 he changed his tune and voted for the reform and then played dumb. Oh and you may recall some of these gems of wisdom from some of the most brilliant Democrats: Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts defended Fannie and Freddie as "fundamentally sound" and labeled the president's proposals as "inane." He later voted for the reforms. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York dismissed Bush's "safety and soundness concerns" as "a straw man." "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," was the helpful advice of both Sen. Thomas Carper of Delaware and Rep. Maxine Waters of California. Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York berated a Bush official at a hearing, saying, "I am just pissed off" at the administration for raising the issue. The housing meltdown is largely a story of greed and irresponsibility made possible by government privilege. If Democrats had granted the Bush administration the regulatory powers it sought, the housing crisis wouldn't be nearly as severe and the economy as a whole would be better off. Oh and do we need to discuss President Clinton's role in this mess? He certainly played a role in this fiasco. We are, this moment, in the midst of all the economic disasters you predict will result from Obama’s stimulus plan. It’s not going to happen--it is happening, as we speak.Yes and how we seek to correct it will determine how long it lasts. No one knows, including you, what Obama’s stimulus package will do. But we do know what Bush’s did, and it was a catastrophe. Of course this implosion is global, and absolutely Bush deserves the bulk of the blame. He put the events into motion long before there was a Democratic Congress, and we are paying for his ignorance today. What Bush did....was warn against the impending disaster and Democrats successfully blocked his attempts at averting the disaster. Again, you are so wrong, things were in motion long before Bush and Clinton enabled the problem to grow even faster. We are paying for a lot of ignorance, mostly by the party you so ardently defend. I understand you're concerned about Obama's stimulus package making the economy much worse; however to claim Obama is going to lead us to an economic doomsday is to ignore the fact that Bush already has.ElphabaI know it feels good to blame Bush for everything....even when it is patently false, but really, the facts just don't support your statements. Obama's emergency spending bill sucks. It is full of pork......it's the Democratic Party's spending wish list for the last 40 years. Be honest, weren't you just a tad disappointed? The crisis as we all know involves the housing market and sub--prime lending, this bill is just a big load of pork and I would have had so much respect for Obama if he would have called Pelosi and Reid out on it and forced them to fix it. Politics as usual? I think so...... Edited February 23, 2009 by bytor2112 Quote
