They could have been among Hagoth’s people that went “northward” (see Alma 63:5).

Many Nephites dissented and joined the Lamanites (see Alma 43:13, 47:35; Moroni 9:24).

There were some periods of history when Lamanites and Nephites had peaceful interaction with each other (see Helaman 6:7). During this time there could have been intermarriage.

Joseph Smith found the remains of a “white Lamanite” (see Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, 3:238).
