Whenever a person places his affections and desires upon anything other than the true and living God; whenever one’s devotion and loyalty and trust is centered in any person or object other than the Lord and his kingdom; whenever the acclaim and applause of men take precedence over the approval of God—then that man is guilty of idolatry.
