"How do you get kids too fast?"  Well, um, you and your spouse, um, er, well .... ya know ....  Nevermind, I'm sure you'll figure it out.

I remember when I was young, we were simply raised to know we did it.  After 8 years old, we did it.

With our children today, we have them fast one meal between 8yo and 12yo.  At 12 and older, they are to fast the two meals.

All I can say is that we made it clear that it was something we do and it is expected of us.  We also made it clear what its purpose was and so forth.  So, we wouldn't force them into it.  We also said that if they were to absent themselves from the fast, that they wouldn't get to eat anything fancy or even tasteful.  If they wanted to eat, they could have bread or rice or so forth with water.

Each fast Sunday, we ask them to focus on a particular purpose.  They do.  None of our kids has ever complained about it.

We fasted growing up, and it was just part of the routine.  Your body gets used to it, and your tummy grumbles in the afternoon, but Fast Sunday dinners were always the best.  Almost like a mini-Thanksgiving.
