How do people here feel about downloading -- music, movies, etc.? I mean, it's legal to tape a movie off the TV (even cable) so why should their be a problem with downloading?

On a related note, let's say you were on a visit to China. You can go into huge stores there and buy DVDs (boxes, imprinted with the movie on the DVD backside, etc.) for about 70 cents. Some are actually licensed (movie companies would rather make a few cents off a sale in China than nothing if it costs 20 dollars), but some must be pirated. Would you buy movies there? Since it is legal there to make the purchase is it ethically questionable?

I really haven't done much with the movie thing recently but I have in the past. I saw the Matrix Reloaded a couple months before it hit theatres. Someone who worked on the movie and had access to the film reals converted it, or gave it to someone to convert, who then made it distributable. I still waited 2 hours in line to watch the midnight showing of the movie when it hit theatres and overpaid for popcorn and a drink. Downloading it didn't cause me to not spend money on it.

I downloaded a few other movies but they sucked so I never saw them while they were in theaters because they sucked so much. Why would I want to support something that sucked. Matrix, in my opinion, didn't svck so I supported it, and I wanted to see the movie on the big screen with louder effects.

The same is true for music. I didn't buy Hillary Duff's new CD because I didn't like the songs on it. If I bought the CD I would have wasted money on buying something that I thought sucked. By downloading the songs, I could preview the CD and see if it was worth dropping a 20 on. However, I did buy the CD by Evanescence, even after downloading all 13 songs on their CD, mainly for the purpose that I enjoyed their music, wanted to support their continued efforts, and because I wanted to actually own the music. Just because it's on my computer doesn't mean it's going to stay there forever. If I buy a CD, I know it's going to be there forever.

The music on the radio sickens me. They play the same crap over and over again, nothing original, always by popular good looking people who at music (Bananas??? By Gwen Stefani??? I bet that song was a bet that she could make a song as stupid as bananas popular). The music industry as it exists today doesn't allow good original music writers to be heard. Through the use of downloading and peer to peer software, good artists can have their music heard without having to pander to radio stations and paying money just to get heard. I hope all the bad artists go bankrupt. When someone is good, their music will be bought.

And look at the artists that won awards at the MTV music awards. Do you know where they got their break in music? On MTV. It's sick! And MTV panders to the attractive musicians, not the good ones.

Good response Dis...

I must admit that I have downloaded extensively, and I don't often buy the CDs when they are eventually released, however I'm pretty poor so that's my excuse! LOL

I don't.. but my son has in the past... he doesn't anymore since the law thing arrested a lot if kids...

Personally, I don't find anything worth losing my peace of mind 9ver... it is just stuff...

Hi, it is my believe that- as much as it is legal- it does not by any means be ethical as well. Though it is a very personal issue, my opinion is that IF such action of downloading-just as copying it- is motivated by selfishness as to avoid paying for such "thing" it is not moral, for it is as "stealing" legally. Be not beguiled by Satan for he makes things look very innocent when they are not.
