Shazz Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 (edited) I know it's very specific to a person when giving a talk and there are all sorts of ways to give it. Im not a good public speaker so I'm going with the subject "Feeling the spirit" So far I have key points of my talk outlined in order Introduction Feeling the spirit Lesson in church I had that inspired me to get a patriarticle blessing where I felt the spirit Sharing the blessing Europe Missionary story Scripture reference Talk about the book "Preach my gospel" 2 Steve young stories ? ? ? Conclusion What do you enjoy or like listening to? Edited December 13, 2009 by Shazz spelling, added a scripture reference advice from pam Quote
pam Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 (edited) What about a Book of Mormon story of one of those that was a tremendous missionary. How you could use their wonderful example to helping you serve the Lord. Make it an opportunity to teach something from the Book of Mormon which is what you will be testifying of on your mission. Honestly I've heard enough Steve Young stories to last a lifetime. Not dissing him...just saying. Edited December 12, 2009 by pam Quote

Guest mormonmusic Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 (edited) I like your outline -- too often people come prepared with a written script which disconnects them from the congregation. You sound like you're going to have an outline, and then speak from the heart -- kudos. My advice? Make it your goal to uplift the congregation by speaking with the Spirit. This is what you'll need to learn to do as a missionary, so it's good practice. Read the 6-7 ways of inviting the Spirit from Preach My Gospel as you're preparing, and try to weave as many of these as appropriate into your talk. Some won't work as it's Sacrament meeting, but the ones that fit, use them: Prayer Scriptures Spiritual Experiences Expressions of Love to God and Man Music Testimony-bearing Priesthood blessings Also, before the talk and during preparation of the talk, humble yourself deeply by asking the Lord to Help you rely upon him. Come to him with what you're going to say in general, and leave your mind open to alterations to that outline. Immediately before the meeting starts, do the same thing -- find a private place and pray for humlility, to help you rely on him, and do so during the Sacrament after any other personal prayers you normally do in that time. Then, get up there and do it. You'll be able to judge the effectiveness of your talk by the amount of Spirit you personally feel while giving it, and if you feel clean and swept when it's over. Also, by the reaction of the people there -- if they are riveted on what you're saying, and some even show signs of spiritual emotion, these are indicators you've been successful in carrying the Spirit to many of them. I'd love to hear how it went after you give it. I think this'll be good practice for your mission. Edited December 12, 2009 by mormonmusic Quote
pam Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 Well I wasn't necessarily talking about a scripture reference though you could use one. I was more referring to telling a story about one of the great men in the Book of Mormon and how you are hoping their example will help you during your mission. Telling the story in your own words but stating.."There is a story found in...(cite scripture reference). Quote

I plan on only going up with the Book of Mormon with a 3x5 notecard and the "Preach my gospel" book. I selected the outline I did because it relates to me and I have been through it. Quote
