pam Posted January 1, 2010 Report Posted January 1, 2010 We have seen, in Chapter 17, Isaiah’s failure to influence King Ahaz of Judah. Now the prophet turns to the people, and in prophecies that parallel those in Chapter 17 he assures them that their present enemies, Israel and Syria, will fall before Assyria. But since they refuse to believe, like their king in this respect, he prophesies disaster, the coming of Assyrian forces to overrun their land like a flood. Despite Assyria’s success in overrunning Judah, Isaiah makes clear that God will not permit the entire destruction of His people. On the contrary, the peoples (the reference is to Assyria) will be overthrown and a remnant of Israel will survive, “for God is with us,” a play on the name Immanuel. The Lord’s plan, not Assyria’s will prevail.Sidney B. Sperry, Book of Mormon Compendium [salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1968], 201-03 Quote
