Starberry Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 So, as far as those foot notes that are at the bottom of the scriptures, how do you use those? And how do you find a cross reference toa scripture? Where does it show where the cross reference is? I just don't understand what those footnotes are at the bottom or what they mean or how to use them. Soooo confusing. Quote
Dravin Posted April 9, 2010 Report Posted April 9, 2010 (edited) Let's use 1 Nephi Chapter 1 verse 1 (or 1 Ne 1:1) as an example:Note the superscript letters (the tiny hovering ones I've highlighted in red)? These correspond to letters in the footnotes:The bold one (1) is the chapter and the smaller one (1) is the verse. The lettering resets after every verse, so the first footnote in any verse is "a" and the second "b" and so on. TG stands for Topical Guide, which is found at the back of LDS versions of the KJV Bible. As you can see with footnote "d" (on the word taught) it makes a reference to the scripture Enos Chapter 1 verse 1 (or Enos 1:1). So the footnotes: Link you to a scripture which contains or teaches a similar concept. Or direct you to the Topical Guide which contains a list of scriptures related to that (similar concept to the first reason, just they can't list out all the scriptures dealing with the subject). So if you look at footnote "a" (on the word born) it directs you to the Topical Guide under Birthright, open up your Topical Guide and look under Birthright and there will multiple scriptures talking about that subject. Sometimes it links you to the Bible Dictionary, which is a glossary of terms of sorts to help explain various concepts. This is also found in the back of LDS KJV Bibles. Or they will explain things such as what an archaic English word means or what the original Hebrew of Greek word was and an alternative interpretation. Or various tidbits of information. bytebear Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 By the way, the online version (scriptures.lds.org) has all the same footnotes, but they are all hyper-linked, so bopping around the scriptures is as easy as clicking your mouse. Quote
