24 And, notwithstanding we believe in Christ, we keep the law of Moses, and look forward with steadfastness unto Christ, until the law shall be fulfilled.

25 For, for this end was the law given; wherefore the law hath become dead unto us, and we are made alive in Christ because of our faith; yet we keep the law because of the commandments

Notwithstanding we believe in Christ, we keep the law

As explained earlier (see commentary on 2 Nephi 5:10), the Nephites lived the Law of Moses in the sense that they obeyed the endless ethical laws and abided by the myriad moral restrictions (Promised Messiah, p. 427). They keep the Ten Commandments. They observed the law of animal sacrifice. But theirs was not a Levitical life-style; they had the higher priesthood and the everlasting gospel. Their vision was more keen than that of their Old World kinsmen—they were able to recognize the person and powers and religion of Christ the Lord behind the ritual of the preparatory gospel.

“We keep the law of Moses”

The Nephites lived the Law of Moses in the sense that they obeyed the endless ethical laws and abided by the myriad moral restrictions. They kept the Ten Commandments. They observed the law of animal sacrifice. But theirs was not a Levitical life-style; they had the higher priesthood and the everlasting gospel. Their vision was more keen than that of their Old World kinsmen—they were able to recognize the person and powers and religion of Christ the Lord behind the ritual of the preparatory gospel….Inasmuch as the Nephites had the spiritual maturity to see beyond the type—to look beyond the Law of the Lawgiver, to penetrate the myriad means to the great end—it was with them as if there was no Law of Moses, no lesser or preparatory gospel. Life was and is and forever will be in Christ.
