Hi everyone! I've been reading the scriptures and investigating the church for about a year and a half. I've also taken the missionary lessons/discussions, and attend my local ward regularly. My baptism, however, won't happen until after my wedding in July. Not sure which one I'm more excited about! I've felt drawn to the LDS church for over ten years, but over the past two it's gotten too strong to ignore.

My mom was baptised into the church in September. She became interested in the church just a month prior to that, took the lessons, and bam! Unfortunately, she's now having issues with some of the church's doctrine. Knowing how she'd react to obscure doctrine once she started serious scripture study, I encouraged her to not rush into baptism. She didn't listen. I'm trying my best to keep her from falling away, but it's really draining being the only person she can talk to about her doubts. :weep:

Anywho, I look forward to participating on this message board!

Hey!

Yeah, church doctrine can be iffy for a lot of people, and I suppose I can understand why (I actually stumbled across this forum while having some issues with some of it and it's actually why I think the Church should be more open about it.) It's no fun to think something is wonderful and then find some unpleasant things about it.

Your mom needs to realize that religion is not about making people happy and feeling good about themselves. Those are some excellent side effects, but not the purpose of it. If it were, my religious would consist of singing songs around a campfire.

Also, I think there is a lot of "doctrine" that terrifies people that really isn't core doctrine but more of just thoughts of prophets and general authorities. As for policies that change, are the principles behind them changing or just the way they are handled? And, as always, is it really such a big deal?

It's great you are reading your scriptures, and I hope all goes well for you and your mom. Welcome!
