shine7 Posted December 19, 2011 Report Posted December 19, 2011 (edited) I like to think of this as our 'basic 60'......it is around 60 items if not counting every spice and herb.We wanted to keep it frugal and basic, yet expand use as far as possible, which the spices/flavorings/herbs etc. will do to a great extent. We did want our 3 month supply to reflect our belief in the health we have had in using wheat, grains, legumes, veggies, fruits, meat sparingly over the years. We have had huge savings on doctor bills by striving to follow the word of wisdom. We buy only on sale, at case lots, at lds cannery, and Costco/Sam's type stores.....as well as growing a garden. Remember that dry beans and lentils (legumes) are also vegetables. We strive to never waste anything, but to use it all.....such as save liquids from cooking vegetables to go into soups, never rinse the dry beans we cook in crockpot unless using for a salad.....that is nutrients down the drain, use potato cooking water in breads and rolls.Water: we can live about 30 days without food, but only about 5 days without waterwheat quick oatmealrice and brown ricemedium grind/stoneground cornmeal from Bob's Red Millunbleached flourpasta: macaroni and spaghettitortilla chipspinto beansblack beanswhite beansbrown or green lentilsnonfat dry milkfresh raw milk from a dairy ($3.00 per gallon)mozzarella cheesecheddar cheesesour cream on sale onlydry parmesan*fresh eggs from same dairy as milk ($1.75 per dozen)bacon chicken ground beef or ground turkeypepperonituna in water / canned salmonjimmy dean sausage if on saleother meats when/if on a good sale pricebutter/margarineolive oilvegetable oilhoney sugarmolassesraisinsfrozen: chopped broccolicorn peasorange juicefresh:potatoesgarliccabbagecarrotsceleryyellow onionsapplesbananasother fresh veggies and fruits on salecanned mandarinscanned pineapple, usually crushed, but tidbits when on saleother fruits home-bottled, such as applesauce, peaches, pearsgreen beansdiced green chilismushroom stems and piecescrushed tomatoes, 14.5 oz. canstomato sauce, 8 oz. cansthings we bottle from our garden....it varies with what grows that yearyeastbaking powderbaking sodavital wheat glutenvinegarsea saltpepperspices/flavorings/herbs/sauces such as soy and worcestershire*the eggs are not washed, just wiped off.....then at home, we rub each egg to completely cover, with a small dime dot of mineral oil, put them back in carton, store in a cold place for up to one year. The mineral oil seals the pores and keeps the eggs fresh. We take the caution of storing them in a cold place.OK.....now......how do we use the list??#1: our drink is most often WATER....figure what your body needs by dividing your weight in half and that is how many ounces you need per day. Do not drink too much, nor too little......the body needs water for chemical reactions in functioning correctly.Breakfast is simple:cracked wheat whole wheat pancakeshome-made cream of wheaty wheatoatmealyummy oatmeal pancakesbrown rice and raisinshuevos lentils n' ricelentils n' egghash brownsoven/german pancakeWe have 4 oz. of orange juice, or some fruit with breakfast, and sometimes whole wheat toast(Often have side salad with a meal....lettuce grown in garden or found on sale....we make our own dressings)Some of our Main Meals (the list is longer than what is on here) : wheat patties/mashed potatoes/green beanswhole wheat crepes w/creamy chicken fillingmeatless meatballs/buttered noodles/broccolidinner oat patties/mashed potatoes/green peaspolenta with mushroom sausage saucehome-made pepperoni pizza/our style of 3 bean saladbiscuits n' gravy/steamed carrotsnoodles n' chicken w/vegetablesitalan noodle soup/french breadone pot spaghetti/green beans/wheat bread sticksbaked mac n' cheese/broccolistir fry noodles n' veggiespotlicker pinto beans/cornbreadburritoes/mexi-potatoes or corn with chili mayorefried beans/mexican rice/topped with cheese/surrounded with tortilla chipsgreen chili skillet migas/refried beans/mexican rice/sour cream/salsachili/corn muffins/cheese celery saladchicken taco soup/crushed tortilla chips on topblack beans w/sausage over riceblack bean soup w/cornmeal dumplingsblack bean n' chicken wraps/carrot raisin saladbean n' bacon soup/whole wheat breadboston baked beans/brown bread muffinscapitol bean soup/home-made refrigerator crescent rollsgerman lentil soup (has bacon)best lentil soup with kale or cabbagelentil 'meatloaf' patties/garlic mashed potatoes/green peasitalian lentil n' wheat stewlentils n' rice w/cheese (see more below)tuna or salmon patties/garlic mashed potatoes/steamed carrotstuna mac salad creamed tuna or salmon with green peas over ricetuna macaroni bake/green peas or green beanscreamed tuna over whole wheat toasttuna sandwiches on whole wheat bread (home-made mayo)sloppy joes/home-made oat buns/side baked beans or leftover boston baked beans/carrotsbacon or chicken fried rice/steamed carrots n' broccolibaked chicken/rice pilaf/green beanschicken stroganoff over rice/carrots or cornpotato spinach frittata/whole wheat toastmushroom patties/scalloped potatoes/broccolivegetable soup/biscuitscabbage pig stew/whole wheat bread or rollsmeal ideas from lentils n' brown rice (can be flavored mexi or italian):tacosburritostostados taco saladtaco soupenchiladas (a favorite)italian souppasta sauce w/ mushrooms addedfilling for whole wheat crepe manicottiSome of our Desserts:wheat mexican wedding cookieswheaty cinnamon rollssnickerdoodlesoatmeal raisin cookiesraisin spice barscornmeal lemon poundcakelentil apple cakepuddingsboston creme piegingerbread w/applesaucecarrot cakecarrot barspotato drop donutsapple piebanana cupcakespineapple upsidedown cakecrushed pineapple piehome-made brownieslentil chocolate cakeHome-Made Snacks:pretzelswheat thinspotato chipsfrench friesmini biscuits or muffinscheese crackersflour tortilla chipscrepe chips Edited December 19, 2011 by shine7 Quote
TornMonkey Posted February 10, 2012 Report Posted February 10, 2012 Would you share your recipes Shine? We're just getting started on our food storage, and I am having a difficult time finding recipes that use it. It seems that most I find are good on paper, and not so, on the plate. Quote
shine7 Posted February 11, 2012 Author Report Posted February 11, 2012 Yes!! I will send you a personal message with 2 site links. The whole idea is to just try......just experiment.....and let your taste buds get used to changes. Take your time.....something you don't like now, you may end up liking after trying it a few times at intervals here n' there. Quote
