DevtheWind Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 Hey all, I've always been curious on why we do not follow the 'rules' that Leviticus set down. Such as, "Don't eat shellfish" and, "don't mix fabrics" and that sort of stuff. Quote
Vort Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 Peter's vision effectively did away with those symbolic parts of the law of Moses. (Or actually, the atonement did away with them by fulfillment, and Peter's vision made that fact known.) Quote
uniderth Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 Matthew 5:17-18 17 ¶Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Many early church leaders refused to eat pork and things like that. I think the real answer is just tradition. Christianity originated as a Jewish sect. It wasn't until the conversion of gentiles and the apostasy that the Old Testament elements began to be done away with. That has continued through until today and is largely a tradition. Quote

Only those circumcised were considered "under the Law". The debate was, "must non-Jewish Christian converts be circumcised before joining the Body of Christ?" The Magisterium said "no". We are under the moral law as is every other human regardless of their religious beliefs, but we are not under the Old Law except as it has been fulfilled by Jesus Christ. Quote
LinuxGal Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 Peter's vision effectively did away with those symbolic parts of the law of Moses. (Or actually, the atonement did away with them by fulfillment, and Peter's vision made that fact known.)Known to Eastern Hemisphere Christians, maybe. Did they have access to Peter's vision in the time of 3 & 4 Nephi? Nevertheless, Jesus clarified things in 3 Nephi. He said the old Law was fulfilled, and set down new precepts to follow.[18] For verily I say unto you, one jot nor tittle hath not passed away from the law, but in me it hath all been fulfilled. [19] And behold, I have given you the law and the commandments of my Father, that ye shall believe in me, and that ye shall repent of your sins, and come unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Behold, ye have the commandments before you, and the law is fulfilled. [20] Therefore come unto me and be ye saved; for verily I say unto you, that except ye shall keep my commandments, which I have commanded you at this time, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
