dan thomas Posted June 29, 2007 Report Posted June 29, 2007 hi I am English and i am seriously thinking of moving my family and myself to Canada. we were thinking of Calgary or there-a-bouts (near the Rockies). we LOVE the outdoors!!! could anyone tell me where the good areas are, for things like schools, wards/stakes, houses etc. also I am a truck driver (class2), so it would also be very useful if there were alot of driving jobs near the area :) I would be VERY greatful for any info!! thanks Dan
Maureen Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 Hello dthomas,Can't give you too much information about Calgary since I'm in Edmonton but my BIL (and family) recently moved to Okotoks, just south of Calgary. A smaller community with probably a better chance of finding reasonable living arrangements. Here's a link:http://www.okotoks.ca/Good luck!M.

robanah Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 I live in Calgary, and all I have to say is, you will really enjoy it if you do move here. There are so many things to do and see. I have lived here most of my life.
Soulsearcher Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 I've lived in Calgary all my life. It's a great place to live, but right now it will cost you an arm and a leg. Getting work isn't to hard. Driving jobs, well that really depends. Probably not exactly what you are looking for but i know our transit system is hurting for drivers. We are facing a huge labor shortage so it shouldn't be too hard to find something. Housing is expensive, though only way to avoid that in the province is to move to much smaller centers. Otherwise, it's a great area.

Soulsearcher Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 Well "Just" outside Calgary the church seems ok, i used to go to Airdrie for church. However " just" outside Calgary also still costs a huge amount. Possibly might want to look at Cardston and area. Lethbridge is close enough to commute, strong church in the area, a temple and decent housing prices compared to central Alberta.

Soulsearcher Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 Actually they are quite a bit south from the rockies, but cost of living is quite a bit less. We have health care so not much to worry about there though it has it's gaps and as for insurance lol sadly i never really pay close attention.

Soulsearcher Posted June 30, 2007 Report Posted June 30, 2007 Schools in cardston seem to be ok, know 4 kids in them and they seem to be doing great, plus very lil trouble to get into in cardston. Lethbridge is a lil bigger, but still not too bad. Rockies would be about 5 hours or more to the better parts i think, but some nice places closer.
robanah Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 hey Robanahwhat part of Calgary are you from? what is church life like there? are there many lds? what would be good areas to think of living in?thanksDan :)I think IMO the best area to live in would be the NW I don;t know why but when I lived up in that area of the city I just felt warm and fuzzy inside. I currently live in the SW part of the city which is pretty good too. I think it all depends on how close you are to down town(if you plan on working there). The rockies are not that far from Calgary Banff is one of the biggest tourist spots around. There is also Lake Louise. If it is being close to the rockies you are looking for then Calgary is perfet. Tis only a 45 minute drive to the Mountains from Calgary. If you are thinking of Waterton that is south of Calgary, if you are familiar with the Cardston, Alberta Temple tis only about a hour from there. Cardston is about 2hrs south of Calgary. What part of the rockies were you looking for??? The Memeber here are great and veryu freindly I think you would love it here heck even the non-memebrs are freindly
Maureen Posted July 1, 2007 Report Posted July 1, 2007 hey Maureenthanks for the reply. thats excatly the type of info i was after!!have you been in contact with Bill and family scince they've moved? if so have they said they liked it there?thanks again!! Dan :)Hey Dan,Don't really talk with them that much but next time I'm on Facebook I'll ask my SIL how she likes the new home and area. Calgary is about an hour from Banff, Lake Louise (rockies). You are 3 hours from the Edmonton Temple (north) and about 3 hours from the Cardston Temple (south). Southern Alberta has a good sized Mormon community (Lethbridge, Raymond, Cardston, Magrath). Residential real estate prices have gone up incredibly in the last 18 months, so the smaller communities are probably lower in cost, like Okotoks. Hope that helps.M.

Try Lethbridge It may work for you. They don't have any schools in Waterton tis mostly a tourist spot.
