Im doing some research regarding the gift of discernment and I wanted to know your ideas as to what discernment is to you.  What is its purpose?  How is it used? How it strengthened?

In a Face to Face talk with the youth Elder Bednar gave the best explanation of this that I have seen to this question. It helped me a lot. You can find it on LDS.org.

Next in my experience, developing spiritual gifts is like developing talents i.e. it takes time and you have to work at it.....gotta run. I'll write more later.

It is the gift to discern. duh.  :P

BSF, it is the ability to determine whether what you are hearing/seeing/witnessing is truth or error (or even a lie) comes from a good spirit or the Spirit of the Lord, with bad intent or good intent, with confusion or understanding, leads to captivity or liberty.

Its the gift and ability to judge correctly between truth and false things. It can manifest itself, as a gift, in numerous different ways. Some can discern the spirits of men, whether they be good or bad, some can discern the proper direction of leadership, some can discern news and current events, some can discern gospel mysteries and settle debate, some can discern church history, some can discern geneology dilemmas, etc.

Overall though, as a general gift, it gives one the ability to be more sensitive to the spirit to correctly judge all things.
