What would your reaction be if you heard the President of the United States offer this prayer as a radio address?

God of the free, we pledge our hearts and lives today to the cause of all freemankind. Grant us victory over the tyrants who would enslave all free men and nations. Grant us faith and understanding to cherish all those who fight for freedom as if they were our brothers. Grant us brotherhood in hope and union, not only for the space of this bitter way, but for the days to come which shall and mustunite all the children of earth. . . . We are all of us children of earth—grant us that simple knowledge. If our brothers are oppressed, then we are oppressed. If they hunger, we hunger. If their freedom is taken away, our freedom is not secure. Grant us a common faith that man shall know bread and peace—that he shall know justice and righteousness, freedom and security, an equal opportunity and an equal chance to do his best, not only in our own lands, but throughout the world. And inthat faith let us march, toward the clean world our hands can make.

Amen.

I would like that very much. I might have chosen a better way to phrase those things, but I agree with what I see as the heart of the message.

I’ve noticed that some people don’t like the fact that we’re trying to fight for the basic freedoms of other people, but as a child of God and an American, I believe we have the responsibility to help other people obtain those basic freedoms as much as we can.

As we say in the pledge of allegiance: one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all.

Funny how we are so concerned about the freedom of people who also happen to control a big chunk of the world oil supplies. Where was this prayer for the millions dying of starvation in some of the poorest african countries.

Also, why do we need to pray for the wellbeing of countries who God Himself can clearly see need help? Would God withhold his care of these countries just because we fail to PRAY for them? I have a real problem believing in a God that waits around to help some one until someone else asks Him to. Sounds ludicris to me.

God either sees needs and meets them or He decides not to. Why does he need US to make that decision?

What if humankind were all part of some eternal family and were mutually responsible to each other for assisting one another in each others plight/salvation?

OK, I've played rope-a-dope long enough.

Apparently, some people assumed the President I was quoting was President Bush.

It was Franklin Roosevelt, in a fireside chat on June 14, 1944, shortly after news of the D-Day invasion was made public.

It's interesting to see the contrast between the America of that day and ours. Two different countries, it seems.

First,

First, I think there is a question about whether freedom, as defined by the prayer-giver, is the only acceptable way of life.

Second, provided the answer to the first question is yes, then though the majority might support the prayer, many of them are so whipped by liberal political correctitude that they wouldn't stand up and support it vociferously.

Third, it would be opposed by the liberal elitists who feel guilty for what they have and there fore seek to blame America (and derivatively themselves) for the world's ills.

Forth, what kind of mineral is "mustunite"

Fifth, a country that would support that kind of philosophical stance had better have some serious virtue.

Sixth, I want to know more before I commit myself to a position.
