Alma 5:45-46
Has anyone read or heard any explanation as to why Jesus was baptized as an adult and not in his younger childhood? I would be interested in any explanations or references from general authorities or reasons you feel it was this way.
a-train
To John was given the express duty and mission to baptize the Son of God. We know that he was the same age as the Saviour, but he 'was baptized while he was yet in his childhood, and was ordained by the angel of God at the time he was eight days old unto this power, to overthrow the kingdom of the Jews' (D&C 84:28)In Numbers 4, the LORD designates the work of the Levitical Priesthood to be performed by those 'from thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old'. (Numbers 4:3 and 30)I suppose it is possible, that the work of John in baptizing the LORD, although he was filled with the Holy Ghost from the womb and baptized and ordained at such a young age, necessitated first that he be 30 years of age in order that he may serve in such a spectacular Levitical calling. It is to be remembered that the purpose of the LORD's baptism was 'to fulfill all righteousness'. The priest who baptized our LORD functioned within all the prescribed limits set by the law of God including the age limit.-a-train
