I'm serious, why are we storing food in our basements and closet. We throw away alot of food, and we just finished throwing away hundreds of pounds of weevil infested wheat, and rice, and cases and cases of 40 year old canned food. My mom and dad prepared and did'nt need it. Why bother?

now now men, calm down, it's a new year 2012. What, 2012, were doomed. I need more than 1 gun, I need every type of gun. Happy new year everyone.

lots of questions answered. I want to get the Utah concealed firearms permit. Are all the classes the same. I thought It took two our three sessions, but they were offering the classes in one day at the gun show.

My wife and I have shot cans and targets with a 22. Killed the mountain side, the targets pretty much survived with out a scratch. The Judge is to heavy and during a home invasion, I'm not sure I could hit anything with a handgun. At least with a shotgun I could use it as a club. Over the years I have worked on some terrible bullet wounds, most of the time we just confirm that there deceased and let the PD, sheriff continue with there investigation. But I'm begainning to worry about how bad the bad guys are getting. If I buy a shotgun for home defense should I buy a shot barrel, they look pretty mean.
-
I'm thinking of buying a shotgun: Awhile back there was a running debate about the usefulness of a shotgun for home self-defense. Size, weight, the ability for a spouse to use it, or would they, you catch the drift of the questions I'm asking. What gauge, and length of barrel is best? I'm even thinking of buying a handgun called the Judge. What do you think?

With super hero grand kids, who needs food storage.

My wife and I just returned from a trip to the big apple (New York, New York). As we enjoyed the beautiful sites and bumped into all 6 million residences of new york. I wonder what it would be like in a big city if the economy went south. As I looked up at the walls of sky scrapers, I wondered what these people would do. Its the same for any really big city, like Chicago or LA. Thankfully we still are allowed to have a gun for protection in the mid-west. It is one of the only devises a man or women has to level the playing field to compensate for the difference in size, strength, and numbers, that might want what you have.

Water is very inportant. We are putting in a cement back patio and cut into a water line. "Oh baby" water water everywhere, and then no water at all. If you want to see how much water you use in a day, turn off your water coming into your home for just one day. You can never have too much stored water.

Maximo, I liked your comments. I visited an emergency supply store in SLC and looked at one of those 225 gallon water tanks, (Ya one tank). Does anyone know how well they would work? They look pretty good and store alot of water.

Oh great, thanks alot. My wife already tells me I spend to much time on the computer talking about doom and gloom. Now you've given me hours and hours of computer time, looking up these's other sites.

Both my wife and I would like to raise a garden and get back to a simpler way of life. Our home sets at 7000 ft, and at that altituted, we have a difficult time growing anything. We depend on food in a can to provide us with our daily bread. Heat and food for a short period of time is our goal. A prolonged period of time like 3 months or longer could create a problem concerning fuel. What do you think?

My uncle is old, thus he has been around awhile and knows alot. He found 2 used but not worn out water heaters (gas or electric will work the same). He plumbed them inline with his water heater. he added approx 100 gal of fresh water to his storage. The water is always being refreshed as it flowthrough the two water tanks before it gets to his water heater that heats the water. Approx 150 gallons of clean circulated water.

Ok, I need a can opener. I came across a "Far Side" cartoon with a man and his wife in there bomb shelter, and bombs are going off above them. The husband and wife are standing with canned goods all around them and no can opener. Its amazing how much stuff we would need to survive, I better stock up on can openers.

It can get lively at times, and I do enjoy getting others ideas.

Silver's at 43.00 an ounce. On the news they say are countries economy is turning the corner. My friends say that as silver and gold go up, the dollar devalues. That sounds bad, my 401K retirement is in dollars.
-
How come silver keeps going up and up? I thought that the recession was over and the economy was on the mend.

Thank goodness! It makes you think how familys, wards/stakes, and communities would need to band together to make a go of it.

I read another book (One second after). It drew a grim picture of how people would act when authority breaks down. If you want to see average everyday people and how they will act during an emergency, go to You-tube and type in (meltup) and (The economic collapse). It has footage of the the riots in LA and other parts of OUR country. It's been said that we are 3 meals away from anarchy. The world is getting mighty wicked.
-
I enjoyed the Patriot book also. Make you realize that you need hundreds of things to make a go of it during hard times.

On our ambulance we have two meds that come in powder form and are reconstitued with saline. Our animal vet uses several drugs in powder form which have a longer shelf life and don't need to be refrigerated. Talk to your doctor and explain what your thinking, he might have suggestions.

I can remember when buying and using a kerosine heater was the rage, and everyone have one. Ours stunk terrible and gave us headaches, we finally gave it to the DI. Propane would be my choice, and thats what I have for backup heat. You can find propane heaters that you can cook on, and provide heat at the same time. You can purchase an extention hose and run it off from a 5 gal propane bottle.

It has been bitter cold all across the mountain states, and survival in the open would be impossible. My choice is to hunker down in my home or seek shelter to stay out of the elements. My 72 hour kit is lite and geared to surviving in a shelter for a few days. You need heat, like a propane heater that can warm soup or water, freeze dried foods, and provide some heat at the same time. You can decide on all the other stuff that you think you need. But remember, it needs to be lite enough to carry if you do need to boggie. We get so much stuff in our 72 hr packs that it would take a pioneer hand-cart just to get to the end of the driveway. I would tell the scouts as they prepared for a 50 mile hike, (pack only the essentials, because I'm not going to carry it).

where talking (fiddler on the roof) type of sewing machine, right.

I like the comment by (peaceroserest) concerning the Amish. I have seen movies and TV programs about this amazing group of people. There culture is geared around not having electricity. I however expect the lights to come on in the bathroom every morning when I get ready for work. heck, I had trouble finding a good flashlight to use the bathroom that night the lights went out. What I need is a big generator, lots of gas and a chain to secure my new generator to my house when I buy it.

We had a storm blow through and the lights went out. It was cold and dark for several hours, and I missed my favorite TV show. What could I have done to make those hours more pleasurable, our can WE (yes, you and me) live without that unseen force called electricity?
