  1. A few years ago the average American across the USA could leave there homes unlocked. Today that can't happen anywhere, not even in rural Wyoming. If the criminals would promise not to hurt my family when they break into my home, or rob my business, I would not need a gun. But I'm old, weak and slow. The gun evens the playing field. Criminals have become more violant as they have become wicked. Even Nephi had to use Laban's sword.
  2. We purchased a Self Reliance can dispensor last year, and really like it. They had samples of there (Thrive) products which I happily partook. Very good stuff, the dehydrated pineapple tasted like candy so we bought several #10 cans of there dehydrated fruit. We dident try any of there other products, but the fruit was great.
  3. Thank you, thank you, it's not worth taking a chance, so I'm throwing the honey cans away. It was going to be alot of work anyway.
  4. Opening up the cans will be the best route, that way I can see what I have and I can work with it in smaller quantities.
  5. Can I get a large (very large) pan, fill it with water and boil the 5 gallons of honey in the medal can to heat it up. I would have to cut the top off or open up the side to get to the hardend honey.
  6. I'm not sure why its oozing, it's next to the furnace and it heats up then gets cold next to the cement wall.
  7. My dad gave me all his honey that has been stored for 30+ years in his basement by the furnace. The Honey is in metal cans approx five gallon size and is starting to oozz from the top. Does anyone know what I need to do with this honey to salvage it. did'nt they find honey still good in the pyrimids? Wonder if there honey was oozzing too.
  8. Starting to get different ideas, great. My wife and I just finished bottling peaches and tomatos. We went to the store to buy some lids and they were out, thank goodness we had some in storage. I think having a good supply of bottling supplies in reserve would be good.
  9. I'm begaining to think your all siding with my wife on the seeds. The second item that I would get if thats all I could grab in a rush would be asprin, yep, asprin. I would get as much as I could carry to the check-out counter. Why! I take it everyday like a majority of people, and it would make a great barter item. We haven't had to barter much, but if something happened, we will all become experts at bartering.
  10. I'll tell you one thing on my list and that would be gas. I would try and buy as much fuel (gasoline) to store as I could.
  11. Seeds were on my wifes and sister-in-laws list. And they wanted to seal them in a can for long term storage. But Seeds could come in pretty handy down that long road with nothing in the store.
  12. At our family reunion, we got on the subject of prepardness. The subject moved to the economy and someone gave a senario that made me think. The senario go's like this. No more trucks, trains or planes will be moving anywhere for a very, very long time. It doesn't matter the reason. You can only go to the store and buy five things to suppliment your storage or your wants and needs. It could be anything from a swiss knife to a bag of Bon-Bons. I know the list can be as long as your arm, and if you could drive a dump truck to clean out the store you and I would, but work with me. Tell me 1 to 5 things that you would rush to get before it's gone. If I start getting several of the same item, I will know that I need to move that to the top of my list. Maybe you only need one item, tell me. Hope I get some input!
  13. We don't have alot of people living in the great state of Wyoming. Mainly because we have long winters and the wind can blow in three directions at once. My wife would love to have a garden, but at 7,000 ft and clay for soil, our options are limited to growing canned goods during the case lot sale. If only we could grow a tomato bigger than a ping pong ball.
  14. Everyones welcome at my house, but the rule is that you have to pack the food up from my basement. We moved a member from one home to another down the street, we thought we was done when he reminded us about his food storage under the stairs. I would have rather moved a baby grand piano. Foods heavy, but boy does it taste good when your hungary. At least start with a full weeks reserve for everyone and work up to a month. (buy a can, store a can)
  15. I agree with everyone concerning propane. It's easy to store, and it won't go bad. You can buy a heating unit that you can cook on. You can also use propane indoors (in an emergency with good ventilation). Don't hold my feet to the fire concerning indoor use, I did said emergency and ventilation.
  16. I'm the emergency specialist in our Ward. I write a short blurp in our news letter every three months concerning emergency prepardness. This month it was easy to come up with a thought because one of our large grocery stores closed. We still have two stores that provide our bread and milk, but when you walk into this store and see the empty shelves, you get that errie feeling that we are dependent on the delivery trucks to bring us our Florida orange juice for breakfast. We've been given wise council through a prophet to at least have a 3 month supply of food for every adult and child. I hope where listening.
  17. We have had 5 gallon mylar bags filled with water for over 20 years, love them. Easy to carry and stack and the water after 20 years still tastes pretty good. Really really. They also come in 1 gallon bags that fit and conform to your 72 hour back pack.
  18. Were coming down to the Hale theater this week, so the case lot sales are on are schedule. I don't know if we can buy the whole package as you suggested at costco, but were going to stock up on freeze dried #10 cans of (Stuff). Not sure yet what we will end up with. Give me an extra can of chili and a jar of peanut butter and a Wyoming man can survive.
  19. OK, it's been months and months. I had to push my way through the book. The book followed several people as they tried to survive after a comet broke up. hitting the earth in several spots. I'm glad that I finally finished. If I got anything out of these books, it make you wonder if you could share everything you have until everythings gone and just hope and pray for the best. In the book they had to turn people away or everyone would starve. I think I would look to a higher authority to give us guidence.

    Mre

Some of the MRE's that are sold by stores have been around awhile, there still good but the military commisary will have the newest MRE's. It's also true that there loaded with calories and protein. My wife and I opened a pack to try it and ended up sharing one.

    Mre

MRE's are made for someone on the go like the military in the field. There compact, and even have the ability to warm themselves. You can buy them with the warming jacket or without, and there pre-cooked so you can eat them cold. There pretty pricey, so only think of supplying your (GOOD) pack our your emergency pack in your car. I live in Wyoming so we carry an emergency pack with water and MRE's, along with other stuff just in case we get stranded in a blizzard.
  22. Thanks, I go to U-tube alot to gleen info on storage and prepardness. U-tube will get your message and ideas out to everyone. Good idea.
  23. I'm going to fill my freezer with TV dinners and buy a generator, My wife and I will be set. Hope she lets me have the salisbury steak.
  24. Thats what I mean. Everything we have is old as the hills. buy food your familys going to eat and keep it fresh by rotating it. Thats the really work, rotate.
  25. We've got a ton, yes I said a ton of wheat, rice and beans in the basement and 25 year old Perm-a-Pack #10 cans filled with who know what. When the end comes I hope the bishop call on me first. I'll gladly donate as long as I don't have to pack it out of the basement. The smart thing is to pick 10 meals that you and your family like and fix all of the time, everyone has there favorites. Then go to the store and buy the products that will make up these meals for a full month. Then next month buy another months worth of food that will make up the 10 meals. You will have already started to rotate the food because its everyones favorites, and you'll be eating your favorites "right" Do that for three or four months and soon you will have a 3 month supply that you like and eat and most important, keep rotated. This is only a start on your quest for a basement full of food. good luck.
