  1. I guess I'm changing topic perhaps??? Not sure if I should have started a new thread to ask this question. What I want to know is what are LDS beliefs about Eve? Is there some website where I could look up LDS doctrine about Eve?
  2. Why don't you just ask Gordon B Hinckley? He wouldn't give you a theory on it. He could get the answer straight from God.
  3. Ah ok... Thanks guys. I still feel that even if more than one person was worthy of a calling, that God wouldn't tell one member of the bishopric one thing, and one another thing. I don't see the point in that - but thanks for your posts.
  4. I'm not a member anymore, so often I look back at when I was a member and wonder what I was thinking at the time. I would like to hear the members opinions about something I experienced, which alot of you will be able to relate with. After my mission I was called as Exec Sec in my ward which amongst everything else also meant I took part in the Bishopric's meetings where they discussed whatever and handled all the callings in the ward. After talking about possible candidates for callings they would write down all the names on a piece of paper and the nominated person would read out the names on the paper and pray for guidance as to who to call to positions. I think everyone understands what I'm saying. Anyway, after the prayer it was often the case that they got different impressions. If they got different impressions they usually put it on the shelf for a week and then tried again a week later. Sometimes it would go on for weeks. The other thing was that the Bishop always had the authority to veto anyway, meaning if necessary he could make decisions despite any objection by any of his counsellors. Looking back on it now, I think that they weren't getting any inspiration at all. If they were getting inspiration from God wouldn't they all get the same answer from the prayer? I know that there were times that they got the same answer ~ but their reason was that they felt fine about so and so, or that they had no problems with that particular person. In short, again, I don't think they were getting any answer from God at all, just listening to their feelings. It reminds me also of my patriarchal blessing which I was so excited to receive when I was a young boy. A glimpse into the future of what I could expect if I was faithful. I can remember feeling scared to share its contents with my sweetheart years later, because of its sacredness. However I did share it her. She was silent for a moment before telling "Oh my goodness, its like identical to mine. I mean it - Word for word." Now I'm sure it wasn't word for word, but I don't doubt what she said. At the time I thought it might be some kind of sign from God about her, but now in retrospect I actually think it was because we had the same patriarch and I'm guessing the blessing we got was standard. The blessings that say you will get married in the temple and all that stuff, and then they don't actually happen? Mormons say that whatever you were promised will happen, it might not be in this life that's all. I did believe that before, but now I think that the patriarchs guess was wrong and that's all there is to it. The problem is as members we were always told that the calling came from God, same with the patriarchal blessings. I took it all so seriously, thinking everything was from God. Remembering 1 Nephi 3:7. Now on one hand - thats actually inspiring isn't it :) But on the other hand, it is clear as crystal that they weren't from God. The mission president's new methods that came from God that actually had a negative effects on the results in the mission. Then his new idea from God, which also didn't work. The gentleman on this site that said the HG told him I was just pretending to be a member, and that I wasn't a real one...That made me laugh so much! My friend feeling the spirit the strongest in his life when his favorite character in the cartoon Dragonball Z turned into a Super-Saiyin. Anyway - so what is this post about? Really specifically I want to know what you members think of the situation within the bishopric for example, where they pray for revelation, and they get different answers. I suppose I will hear something along the lines of the church is perfect, but people aren't perfect. Any comments please
  5. sixpack no offense to you, or anyone else here, but this comment is drawn from your theory - don't worry - i know you said its just a theory. don't you think satan would know exactly what he is doing? people that suggest he is kind of unaware that he is helping in the plan, i can't agree with them. according to the story, we're the ones with the veil across our minds that can't remember what happened, not satan. he would know gods plan perfectly and i think he'd know exactly what hes doing. i don't think we would know more than him.
  6. Is that what the church teaches or just your opinion? President Hinckley’s interview with Time: Q: Just another related question that comes up is the statements in the King Follet discourse by the Prophet. A: Yeah Q: ... about that, God the Father was once a man as we were. This is something that Christian writers are always addressing. Is this the teaching of the church today, that God the Father was once a man like we are? A: I don’t know that we teach it. I don’t know that we emphasize it. I haven’t heard it discussed for a long time in public discourse. I don’t know. I don’t know all the circumstances under which that statement was made. I understand the philosophical background behind it. But I don’t know a lot about it and I don’t know that others know a lot about it.
  7. looks like these two are conflicting too... no i don't believe the bible
  8. oh ok, i thought these scriptures might have been contradicting eachother, but i guess not.
  9. Here's one I came across today. Jacob 2:23-24 “For behold, thus saith the Lord: this people begin to wax in iniquity; they understand not the scriptures, for they seek to excuse themselves in committing whoredoms, because of the things which were written concerning David and Solomon his son. “Behold David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord.” D&C 132:1 & 39 “Verily thus saith the Lord… you have inquired of my hand to know and understand wherein I, the Lord, justified my servants… David and Solomon,… as touching the principle and doctrine of having many wives and concubines - … “David’s wives and concubines were given unto him of me.” Any comments?
  10. is that what the mormons believe though? i don't think so. and i should say here too that its not just the mormons that take the flood story literally. other christians that take it literally also say it was the first rainbow, and other ideas spring off from that such as that maybe it didn't rain before the flood at all, the canope and all that stuff. here's the joseph smith quote again.. "I have asked of the Lord concerning His coming; and while asking the Lord, He gave a sign and said, "In the days of Noah I set a bow in the heavens as a sign and token that in any year that the bow should be seen the Lord would not come; but there should be seed time and harvest during that year: but whenever you see the bow withdrawn, it shall be a token that there shall be famine, pestilence, and great distress among the nations, and that the coming of the Messiah is not far distant." so joseph was talking to jesus at the time and he asked him when he was coming. "in the day of noah i..." that sentence makes it sound like thats when he put the bow in the sky to me, not that he's just pointing at another rainbow to noah saying, well i'm gonna use that as a token for this." kinda takes the whole miracle out of the event. the next part of the quote jesus is saying any year the bow is there, he's not gonna come. that sounds to me like he put it there then, and he'll take it away right near the end. i guess you can read into this one another way if you like, but really? isn't that what he's saying. he told noah that the bow is a sign in ANY year that the bow should be seen the Lord would not come. doesn't that make him a liar? please don't strike me with lightning - because after noah he did come. he was born in bethlehem and he lived on the earth for more than 30 years. i haven't heard any historical reports about strange lack of rainbows when he came to the earth then.
  11. The universe is so big, I think there is life out there. I don't think they visit our earth sometimes though.
  12. Sixpack was right, of course I don't believe that. I've resorted to sarcasm alot lately...but it is supposed to be tongue in cheek, just a way to get a point across. Here are some quotes that are pretty conclusive on the topic of Are blacks descendants and How could they make it on the ark. Joseph Fielding Smith: "That negro race, for instance, have been placed under restrictions because of their attitude in the world of spirits, few will doubt. It cannot be looked upon as just that they should be deprived of the power of the Priesthood without it being a punishment for some act, or acts, performed before they were born." (The Way to Perfection, page 43.) "Ham, through Egyptus, continued the curse which was placed upon the seed of Cain. Because of that curse this dark race was separated and isolated from all the rest of Adam's posterity before the flood, and since that time the same condition has continued, and they have been 'despised among all people.' This doctrine did not originate with President Brigham Young but was taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith .... we all know it is due to his teachings that the negro today is barred from the Priesthood." (The Way to Perfection, pages 110-111.) John Taylor: " . . . after the flood we are told that the curse that had been pronounced upon Cain was continued through Ham's wife, as he had married a wife of that seed. And why did it pass through the flood? Because it was necessary that the devil should have a representation a upon a the earth as well as God;.... " (Journal of Discourses, Volume 22, page 304.) "When he (Satan) destroyed the inhabitants of the antediluvian worlds, he suffered a descendant of Cain to come through the flood in order that he might be properly represented upon the earth." (Journal of Discourses, Volume 23, page 336.) "As a result of his rebellion, Cain was cursed with a dark skin; he became the father of the Negroes, and those spirits who are not worthy to receive the priesthood are born through his lineage." (Mormon Doctrine, 1958, page 102.) Blacks have been allowed to hold the priesthood and receive all its blessings since 1978. I understand that. Do mormons still believe in statements such as that being black is a punishment for not being valiant in the pre-existence? I ask this seriously because I was still attending church until earlier this year and these are the things that I had been taught my whole life. I know that alot of members are really good people, but what is the belief mormons have now?
  13. yeah but then again god didnt say to noah get two of every creature except for the big ones. unless they were too evil to listen to noah's admonition to get in the ark. in that case they would have got what they deserved.
  14. i want to try a dina-sour. my mouth is puckering just thinking about em
