  1. According to the latest statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice, more than two million men and women are now behind bars in the United States.1 The country that holds itself out as the "land of freedom" incarcerates a higher percentage of its people than any other country. The human costs — wasted lives, wrecked families, troubled children — are incalculable, as are the adverse social, economic and political consequences of weakened communities, diminished opportunities for economic mobility, and extensive disenfranchisement.

Contrary to popular perception, violent crime is not responsible for the quadrupling of the incarcerated population in the United States since 1980. In fact, violent crime rates have been relatively constant or declining over the past two decades. The exploding prison population has been propelled by public policy changes that have increased the use of prison sentences as well as the length of time served, e.g. through mandatory minimum sentencing, "three strikes" laws, and reductions in the availability of parole or early release.

Although these policies were championed as protecting the public from serious and violent offenders, they have instead yielded high rates of confinement of nonviolent offenders. Nearly three quarters of new admissions to state prison were convicted of nonviolent crimes.2 Only 49 percent of sentenced state inmates are held for violent offenses.3

Perhaps the single greatest force behind the growth of the prison population has been the national "war on drugs." The number of incarcerated drug offenders has increased twelvefold since 1980. In 2000, 22 percent of those in federal and state prisons were convicted on drug charges.4

  2. This is a lie, AGStacker. I assume you are an unwitting dupe to passing along this lie, so I am letting you know that your claim is false. A government study shows the numbers and includes this excerpt:

"In 1997, the year for which the most recent data are available, just 1.6 percent of the state inmate population were held for offenses involving only marijuana, and less than one percent of all state prisoners (0.7 percent) were incarcerated with marijuana possession as the only charge, according to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). An even smaller fraction of state prisoners in 1997 who were convicted just for marijuana possession were first time offenders (0.3 percent).

"The numbers on the federal level tell a similar story. Out of all drug defendants sentenced in federal court for marijuana crimes in 2001, the overwhelming majority were convicted for trafficking, according to the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Only 2.3 percent—186 people—received sentences for simple possession, and of the 174 for whom sentencing information is known, just 63 actually served time behind bars."

"Imprisoning millions of people for marijuana use"? I don't think so.

Yes, I understand quite well. Do you understand by what means constitutionality is established? (Hint: Madison v. Marbury, 1801)

The government says it does. The court of final appeals agrees with them. The Constitution has been interpreted by those whose duty it is to interpret to allow such actions. So are we supposed to take the musings of a random 25-year-old as the final word?

Your opinion and two bucks will buy you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

To destroy the agency of man? Certainly not by working to pass laws for an ordered society.

Haha! OK Vort. You win. Keep on believing everything the government tells you. Believe that marijuana is evil. Believe that the economy is recovering. Believe that the real bad guys are outside of our land. Believe that all of these laws and rules are for your "pursuit of happiness". Believe that all of these taxes are just and necessary. Believe that a naive 25 year old would never have any good insight and don't dare to realize that maybe your entire paradigm is off.

Good luck to you. I hope you have food storage and something other than the US dollar because we all will be needing it soon.

I do suggest you read the writings of the Founding Fathers. You will be pleasantly surprised.

  3. I am referring to the drug companies. If no law regulated the personal growth of marijuana then many people would self medicate and not purchase prescription drugs. Sure states are making businesses out of marijuana but if people were legally allowed to grow it then the states wouldn't profit.

If marijuana was legal we wouldn't have the crime involved with people trying to traffic it. Again, read up on prohibition and learn why it didn't work.

Facts?! You people act like the government is supposed to be the parents of America. When did ANYONE prosper when they were forced to live and behave a certain way.

Taking away agency is the devil's plan. You'd rather have the government tell you what you cannot do as opposed to not doing it because it is wrong.

Also, hemp is also illegal yet it has many quality characteristics.

Good video but who cares about people with disabilities. Let's just prescribe them "what the doctor ordered"! Let's not forget that using marijuana supports terrorism.

Constitutionally marijuana should be able to grow in your backyard just like tomatoes.

  4. Imprisoning millions of people for marijuana use is not providing for the general welfare of the people. Intentionally breaking unconstitutional laws? Do you understand what the Constitution is? It is the supreme law of this land and no law can negate it by any means meaning if I wish to intake marijuana the government has no legal authority to tell me no. 420 friendly? I am correct on what the Constitution says. It is not the government's responsibility to tell me what I can or cannot take into my body.

Many Mormons do not understand the war in Heaven. How do you think Satan executes his plan? He does it primarily through government and the United States is no exception. We were warned specifically in Ether to "awake" to our "awful situation" and warned to not let secret combinations get above us. The government conspires against the people. They did so in the Old and New Testaments, the Book of Mormon and in the early days of the Church and they definitely do so now. It is wrong to believe that someone who intakes marijuana to self medicate is going to suffer damnation. The early Apostles and saints drank and smoked regularly. The Word of Wisdom, which I recognize are commandments now, helped the people better respect and take care of their bodies. We obey the Word of Wisdom now as a commandment because it isn't worth the risks. The risks that I mentioned in my previous post.

Marijuana has proven medical benefits. Here is one of them.

Cannabis and Cannabinoids (PDQ®) - National Cancer Institute

  5. They have never said anything directly against marijuana. It is an herb which God created and it has many benefits to it. I think if anything, the evil designs come from governments making it illegal because they'd rather profit off selling prescription pills. Anyone could go in their backyard and grow marijuana but this isn't profitable.

Their are nonviolent criminals in jail because of smoking marijuana. This is idiocy in its purest forms. Do I think people should use it while driving? Of course not. Should it be legalized? Of course it should. We saw what prohibition created.

The fact is if you support the Constitution than you would support no laws prohibiting marijuana. It isn't the government's responsibility to control everything you do.

Also, many Mormons think it is OK to be 500 pounds or pop prescription pills like it is candy because the governments approve but don't you DARE touch marijuana!

Drinking wine or smoking cigarettes DO NOT make you a bad person but God knows the risk of doing so. Drunk driving accident, lung cancer, possibly infidelity while drunk, losing virginity, unwanted child etc. It isn't wise to partake in things that can potentially cause harm. The only harm I see with marijuana is the risk of being thrown in jail because the government has made it illegal.

For the record, I am 25 and have NEVER consumed alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana or illegal drugs (including pharmaceuticals besides when I had pneumonia, very painful). Never! I just thoroughly understand the Constitution whereas my fellow brethren and sisters do not.

I know many here will disagree with me but the truth will win in the end.

  6. Thanks a lot for your reply. It helps a lot but I am wondering as well who checks for your recommend or does anyone when a blessing is given within a ward other than your own? For example, when the blessing is to take place have the men involved talked to the bishop or counselor of that ward beforehand?

I actually was able to ordain my little brother when I was a Priest. Neat experience but pains me more that my father wasn't more involved. :(

  7. Hi. When a blessing is being performed what is the requirement to participate in them. Having the higher priesthood and a current temple recommend?

If it is for someones ward other than your own who checks to see if you have one? I ask because I have one but haven't used it recently and I wonder if they'll ask if I have been using it or just check to see if I have one.

Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

My family is all Mormon yet really only myself, brother and sister in law are active. This will be the first out of my nieces and nephews who will be blessed and I want to be able to participate.

    Thanks again.

  8. My mother is a midwife who quit her job when the first baby came along and never had a job until she turned 65 and went on a rebellious stage and donned a K-mart apron and walked the 2 miles to K-mart (she can't drive and my dad refused to drive her to work at K-mart) on her 65th birthday. And she can barely speak English! Anyway, she put in her K-mart job application - previous experience: Manager of Household Services - 41 years. Which is true - she had 2 maids, 1 laundry person, 1 driver, 1 gardener that she managed!

I've been a paid programmer since I was 12 years old.

Got my Bachelors at 20 years old, getting my master's diploma next week. Yeay me.

I don't have to work. My husband makes enough money to support our family. I work because I hate to cook and I hate to clean after 3 boys (you know, the bathroom would be much cleaner if they would just sit down to pee!!!), and I don't have the patience to teach... so I work instead of spending the time cleaning the house - I hire a cleaning person, I pay money for private school, and I buy pre-made dinners with my money. Then I'm not stressed out and my husband can take off work to go to all these scouting things and whatever else the boys need. And he also gets to just take off work to watch Monday Night Football or something. Being a programmer, I work from the home office.

So yeah, the Proclamation to the Family emphasizes women to stay home and take care of the children and household - but that doesn't necessarily mean you can't work.

So what is it you do as a mother? All the things you don't do sound like a mother should be doing. Sounds like you want to be a mother without the responsibilities. Sorry for being harsh but it just seems that way.

  9. For the first time since joining the Church, I attended an Easter Sunday service (usually i'm out of town visiting my folks for Easter). Coming to the Church from a Methodist/Presbyterian background, I expected something at least slightly similar, but I've got to say I was slightly let down. Besides mentioning that it was indeed Easter Sunday at the opening of the Sacrament Meeting, nothing was different, and in fact, none of the talks in Sacrament, GP, or even EQ really even touched on the subject or its import.

It's like easter had about as much impact as "Boxing Day" has on someone here in the US.

I know in my previous churches, there would be a retelling of the Easter story, and more likely than not the service would begin with the minister stating "He is risen" with the members saying "He is risen indeed" in response or something similar.

So this got me curious and quite frankly wondering- What's the LDS take on Easter?

You can go to Arizona and few one of the largest outdoor pageants in the world! I know I did!

  10. I'm sure I still love her

Number 1. STAY COMPLETELY AWAY FROM THE CO-WORKER! Of course you may need to communicate because you work with her but that's it! You are still married and doing anything with this person would be horrible wrong and stupid and you would regret it!

If you TRULY love your wife you will want to help her fix it no matter the circumstance. Essentially, try harder. Don't give up on her. You having desires for this other woman is bad. Think about your wife. Did you see Monson's talk in Priesthood? When was the last time you and your wife sat in on a sealing? You haven't exacerbated all of your options!

Stick to the plan. Hold to the rod. Don't give up yet.

Yes this needs to be fixed but get someone involved. Anyone who could help.

  11. My dad's stories of living through the depression are so far removed from the reality for America today, it might have well been another world.

    LM

This is why it is going to be so bad. We have been so proud and arrogant. We have raised generations of spoiled, disrespectful, hands out, "I'm never wrong", "I deserve everything" and so many more terrible things. Your dad's stories were when less people actually existed on the Earth therefore areas were far less concentrated and people actually had respect for others.

  12. Consider the following quotes.

    Joseph Smith Junior

"There will be two great political parties in this country. One will be called the Republican, and the other the Democrat party. These two parties will go to war and out of these two parties will spring another party which will be the Independent American Party. The United States will spend her strength and means warring in foreign lands until other nations will say, “Let’s divide up the lands of the United States,” then the people of the U.S. will unite and swear by the blood of their fore-fathers, that the land shall not be divided. Then the country will go to war, and they will fight until one half of the U.S. army will give up, and the rest will continue to struggle. They will keep on until they are very ragged and discouraged, and almost ready to give up—when the boys from the mountains will rush forth in time to save the American Army from defeat and ruin. And they will say, “Brethren, we are glad you have come; give us men, henceforth, who can talk with God.” Then you will have friends, but you will save the country when its liberty hangs by a hair, as it were." - Autobiography of Mosiah Hancock

    Also.

As recorded by A. Milton Musser:

"...Prophet Joseph said that the next great (U.S. civil) war after the war of the rebellion (the Civil War of the 1860's between the North and the South) would commence in a little town now called Chicago but at that time it would have grown to be a very large city. And another brother told me that the Prophet said that the cause of the next great trouble of the United States would be the depreciation of the currency of the United States. I believe I have given you all the facts in as short and concise manner as possible."

This pretty much sums it up. US government spending way to much money. Wars we shouldn't be in and debt that we are drowning in. Americans don't have respect and dignity. Imagine waking up and the banks are closed or your money has been devalued 30-50%.

Also, I think it is safe to say the "war" between the Democrats and Republicans is a, for the most part, nonviolent war. Essentially what we are experiencing now with the blaming either the Democrats or the Republicans.

  13. Good advice for both of us.

I see you are unwilling to make a specific prediction. So, it's just general vague doomsaying then? That's ok, but I'll keep contributing to my work's 401k plan if that's fine with you. Because from where I'm standing, the future looks far rosier than it does to you.

I didn't say your 401k didn't look nice but the dollars that will be held by all Americans we be heavily devalued in the coming few years unless they hold gold, silver or foreign currency.

Also, it is impossible for me to say exactly when I think the dollar will go down x amount. Although you should look at a chart and see where it is headed.

  14. Don't be so sure you know everything ;) . Start here and we'll talk later.

Peter Schiff pretty much is one of the best economist we currently have. He called the housing mess 100% even before 2006 and people laughed at him and ridiculed him. Sounds like that "big and spacious building" mentality to me. You can also YouTube "Peter Schiff Was Right". He warned people of the dangers of low interest rates by the Federal Reserve. Easy money came to the banks and they were able to lend money carelessly. Banks use to require 20% down and verified income. This gave the banks a cushion when and if people stopped paying their mortgage. But this time around was different. Banks lent to ANYONE no matter the circumstances. And these people were able to buy multiple homes. Of course this isn't the actual cause of the coming depression. I am just trying to explain a little bit of Peter and his stance.

So why are we going to go through a depression? I don't know where to start. Well, essentially the Church warns against the dangers of debt and the US government has unsustainable amounts of it. See, the Treasury sells Treasury bonds to fund government expenditures. Currently no foreigners are really buying our bonds so the Federal Reserve is buying Treasury bonds with printed money. When they print dollars the value of all our dollars go down. This is inflation. You have more dollars chasing the same amount of goods. Think of a Michael Jordan rookie card. They are valuable because they are rare. Well what if there were 6 billion of them? Not so valuable now. The Federal Reserve, to save the dollar, needs to raise interest rates drastically but this would cripple our economy because the interest on our debt would be overwhelming! So the other option is to print money like there is no tomorrow and the result in the end is hyperinflation. That is why gold is at record highs and silver is approaching its all time high. Not to mention commodities are up across the board. Inflation is rampant in China because we are devaluing our dollar. I promise you will see commodities continue to rise and within a few years the dollar will be a worthless currency. Read up on the Weimar Republic. Also read about QE 2. Members of the Church don't understand that the devil's plan is very deceptive. We, as Americans, think we are invincible. This is especially true among my age group, 25. God doesn't want to destroy America yet so he will greatly humble it first. This is the cycle discussed in the Book of Mormon although this time is so much different because many countries back their dollar with our dollar. When our dollar loses values mostly all other dollars lose value.

Why was our dollar the reserve currency? Well, for one it was backed by gold and internationally convertible to gold until 1971. Then gold ran from $35 to close to $900. Then Paul Volcker from the Fed raised interest rates very high in 1980. Depending on how old you are you may remember this. This essentially save the dollar because it limited the number of total dollars in circulation. Well, they were able to maintain a relatively strong dollar until the 90's when low interest rates by Alan Greenspan were present. Since 1999 gold and silver have been on a bull run because as more dollars enter into the economy their power to purchase weakens. We are at a point where are debt is not sustainable.

Bush spent more than all presidents combined and Obama is on course to do the same. This will be the end of the American empire.

  15. Wyoming - I assure you the economy is going to be entering a depression if it isn't in one already. The main stream media is a tool of the devil and is used to control the population. A silver quarter will buy the same amount if not more gas than it used to. A silver quarter is almost worth $8! Silver and gold will definitely protect you from inflation or currency devaluation. When gold was $35 an ounce before its bull run in the 70's, you could buy a mustang for around $3,500, keep $3,500 in cash or save 100 gold coins valued at $3,500. Today those gold coins would be worth close to $150,000. Silver and gold are real money where "moth and dust" do not corrupt!

  16. Silver is going up because the dollar is being devalued. Silver will continue to go up as the United States empire is coming down. The Treasury spends money that it has been lent. Currently not many countries are buying our bonds so the Federal Reserve is buying Treasury bonds. This equates to money printing. More dollars chasing the same amount of goods. This is where inflation comes from. If the Federal Reserve stop QE 2 and raised interest rates than the interest payments on our debt would be nearing dangerous levels.

If you don't own any precious metals I suggest you begin to start buying now. The US dollar will be pretty much worthless in the future. Not 10-20 years from now but more like within a few years.

I think many Mormons think that the United States will stay strong economically as wickedness continues. I don't know they don't recognize that the US government debt is out of control and we are headed into the greatest depression the world has ever seen.

  17. Apparently many people responding don't ACTUALLY read the entire post. This is his wife and yes it is very strange for her to want to leave by herself! Running away from fights or problems isn't a good idea nor is it mature. He also said that she NEVER wears underwear like that. I would be suspicious for sure.

Honestly, I would look at a recent credit card or bank statement to see if she just recently purchased them. It isn't normal for someone to travel alone like your wife did.

As for her not being interested in the Church, well that's another story and a bummer.

  18. I'm am not sure why he/she would ask them if they were humble enough. Clearly, if the poster is being honest, they deserve to have a temple sealing. I typically find the loudmouth Mormons to gossip, backbite and offend others.

Myself, there is not a single individual on this earth that could offend me enough so that I would stop attending church but I have close people to me who don't go because they have problems with members. I of course tell them this is dumb but members need to learn how they talk to other members. Belonging to the same, true, church doesn't give people the right to meddle and judge.
