Missionary age: How does this change things in your family?
JustSimplyMe replied to Vort's topic in General Discussion
I think that it may be less people getting married at 18 and 19, but if YM decide to serve at 18, they will get home at 20 and if a YW serves at 19 she will be home at 20 1/2. So I honestly think a lot of marriages are going to be 20, 21+ or just 21+. That is a little better than how it is now at BYU and BYU-Idaho. Another thing is, if they both serve missions the marriage probably will be blessed by it. -

You're not crazy, I said the word whoa and started to tear up. Honestly, I don't think it is a Utah thing. I'm from Maryland and I've said to myself that I wouldn't serve a mission if I was engaged, married, or in a relationship that is serious. My seminary teacher also told us those 3 reasons are reasons why a girl shouldn't serve. Most 19 year old's aren't married yet, but usually are in a 18-21 time frame. I was reading some Facebook posts where girls said they are considering on going on a mission now. -

He still can go on a mission at 19, it is just an option to go at 18. Also, he can go and sit down with the bishop and ask him how he can receive financial aid because he and your family dont have the money for a mission. That is what I have to do when I am 19, I don't have money, nor does my family. -

They said they haven't thought of it yet, however they said right now they will leave it be. YM 18-25 and YW 19-30. -

Maybe women won't date if they decide to go on a mission, but I was thinking it may be a little easier to get into BYU due to the missions. But, now I take that back. -

That's going to be funny. I was reading other things on Facebook and read that YM will be saying I want to marry a RM or guys asking girls if they went on missions -

I like how they give the option of serving at 19 for young women because at 19 you are in college, some are married, a lot of them are not so between 18-21 is where a lot of them marry. Which I think at 19 a lot of YW will possibly go on missions and not really care about getting married until a little older. -

I think that if you are ready at 18 for a YM and 19 for a YW then serve, if you don't have the money your ward may help. -

I agree it will strengthen marriage and family. I think that the YM and YW when the come off his/her mission they will be looking for high standards in his/her future spouse. Plus, it shows to the couples children that they also should serve a mission. I think that some marriages will take place after the age of 20's. When I hear about BYU and BYU Idaho, I hear about how girls marry at 18-19 yrs old. -

I think that there will be tons of sister missionaries and can wait for their missionaries now without any other temptation of men, well they will have elders near them, but still. -

True some YM will probably want to serve at 18 and others at 19. I think maybe the pressure will be on them for going at 18 or 19. Parents probably will be encouraging their sons to serve earlier and possibly bishops may encourage it also. -

That is true. Plus, I think it will help them with becoming less likely to deal with temptations or leaving the church. I also agree that it may make marriages later in life or after missions for male and female. I think that a lot of YW get married early and all. -

I read that on another forum. I have to say I personally would like to serve 19 rather than 21. -

I'm watching it and I know it is an option. I like the option and I feel a lot of people may go at those ages. -

Your right it is revelation and Heavenly Father has a purpose on why they are giving this option. I was just wondering what people think of it. -

The next time I will see him I probably will talk to him about that. I just got an interview last week, but I could always pull him aside and tell him about my wanting to serve. I am going to fast about it next Sunday and re-read my patriarchal blessing that heavily speaks about service and study the scriptures. -

I know and they said that those ages aren't for everyone, but it is cool that the youth has this option. -

I was talking with 14 yr old young woman from my ward over Facebook about this. She said it is great for the girls, but the boys it may be bad because at 19 they have more time to be in the world to become more mature. But, I think that it may be better for YM going to missions at 18 because they have a less chance of leaving the church before his mission and can have less temptations. Another thing is that just for some YM they have less time to prepare, but I think everything will work out. I also was talking to the same YW about us YW going and she said she is starting to save up and I told her well I can't save that much because I joined the church at 13 and have about 1 1/2 year to turn my papers in and then 2 years to prepare. For me I would need to have financial aid and if I get it, I would really go on one. -

I think it may be cool because I will be the first missionary out of my field, however my non-LDS family members may not like it. Also, I will be coming home when one of the boys from my ward is coming home (he will be going on at 19). Another thing is there hasn't been a sister mission from my ward for about 4 yrs and I will be one who will attend:) -

It may be easier to get into BYU now:) Just saying and I agree with skippy that there may be more mission field marriages since most of them go home around the same time. -

Church Lowers Age Requirement for Missionary Service YM can now serve at 18 instead of 19 YW can now serve at 19 instead of 21 As a young woman, I find it amazing that I can serve a mission in two years, and I am actually considering it. The only thing I have to worry if I serve is money for a mission. Also, I think there will be more missionaries out in the field (elders and sisters). Sister missionaries definitely would increase because at 21 a lot of them are married or about to start a career and may feel to old. Lastly, I think it is cool that most of the elders and sisters will be home around the same time. What do you all feel about the new change?
