I read most of the article, and although I believe in the prophets and the necessity of following their counsel, I found the tone of the article to be one of dependence. For example, this sentence seems to ignore the personal responsibility that we all have to receive our own revelation on a daily basis: "I believe that faithful members look to LDS General Conference to receive specific direction to help them navigate the murky waters of mortality — today, often clouded and promoted through mainstream media." How often have the Brethren encouraged us to study the scriptures, particularly the Book of Mormon? When Nephi sees the rod of iron, he sees people clinging directly to it, not clinging to someone who is clinging to the rod. And in the Doctrine and Covenants we read: For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been deceived—verily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day. (Doctrine and Covenants 45:57) And every one that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit cometh unto God, even the Father. (Doctrine and Covenants 84:47) I like what Sister Beck said about learning to recognize and follow the Spirit: "The ability to qualify for, receive, and act on personal revelation is the single most important skill that can be acquired in this life.
