  1. For recognizing the Spirit, try Following the Light of Christ into His Presence, by John Pontius. For advanced topics, consider reading Light in the Wilderness by M. Catherine Thomas.
  2. jb789, beautifully put!

  4. Any thoughts on what it means to "see eye to eye"? The Lord quotes Isaiah in chapters 16 and 20. Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing, for they shall see eye to eye when the Lord shall bring again Zion. (3 Nephi 16:18) Then shall their watchmen lift up their voice, and with the voice together shall they sing; for they shall see eye to eye. (3 Nephi 20:32) Paul O'Donnell
  5. Christ said the following: 2 I perceive that ye are weak, that ye cannot understand all my words which I am commanded of the Father to speak unto you at this time. 3 Therefore, go ye unto your homes, and ponder upon the things which I have said, and ask of the Father, in my name, that ye may understand, and prepare your minds for the morrow, and I come unto you again. (3 Nephi 17:2–3) What do you think he wanted the people to do when he said "prepare your minds"? Paul O'Donnell
  6. Very nicely organized!
  7. The Endowment ceremony was designed, in part, to teach us how to come into the presence of God while still in mortality. The veil is the last step. When we are worthy, we will receive the promised blessing and then be invited into His presence.
  8. I read most of the article, and although I believe in the prophets and the necessity of following their counsel, I found the tone of the article to be one of dependence. For example, this sentence seems to ignore the personal responsibility that we all have to receive our own revelation on a daily basis: "I believe that faithful members look to LDS General Conference to receive specific direction to help them navigate the murky waters of mortality — today, often clouded and promoted through mainstream media." How often have the Brethren encouraged us to study the scriptures, particularly the Book of Mormon? When Nephi sees the rod of iron, he sees people clinging directly to it, not clinging to someone who is clinging to the rod. And in the Doctrine and Covenants we read: For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, and have not been deceived—verily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day. (Doctrine and Covenants 45:57) And every one that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit cometh unto God, even the Father. (Doctrine and Covenants 84:47) I like what Sister Beck said about learning to recognize and follow the Spirit: "The ability to qualify for, receive, and act on personal revelation is the single most important skill that can be acquired in this life. 9. Hi, I joined the church in 1975, I am married and have eight children, I love discussing the gospel and the scriptures. I am a firm believer in these words from Joseph Fielding Smith: "It makes no difference what is written or what anyone has said, if what has been said is in conflict with what the Lord has revealed, we can set it aside. My words, and the teaching of any other member of the Church, high or low, if they do not square with the revelations, we need not accept them. Let us have this matter clear. We have accepted the four standard works as the measuring yardsticks, or balances, by which we measure every man's doctrine." (Doctrines of Salvation Vol 3.). And this is my favorite quote: "Study the word of God, and preach it and not your opinions, for no man's opinion is worth a straw. Advance no principle but what you can prove, for one scriptural proof is worth ten thousand opinions." (History of the Church Vol 3.) I look forward to many edifying conversations. Paul O'Donnell
