  1.

In that case, we should ban all school Latino-based clubs because they racially discriminate against non-Latinos. Same for any other cultural clubs. Heck, let's nip this problem in the bud, and ban all clubs because they have to discriminate against SOME type!

    /sarcasm

Not sure where you go to school I guess there could be some that are close minded...a couple come to mind..., but I am pretty sure that at most institutions of higher learning (and I have taught at a couple) the Latino club would be open to more than just individuals of Latino descent.  For example, though I am not a student I am a member of the Saudi National club on campus simply because I find the culture fascinating.  I was welcomed warmly.

And a Christian club would be open to Christians, as well as people who are curious as to what Christianity is. One of my friends who attends something called Young Life told me that they where welcoming to her friend who is not Christian, and is Bi.

  2. And yet, in the second example, the benefits were clearly for the majority. You could draw out that to be 6 billion people taking from the remainder of the world rather than 3 taking from 1. Either way, the benefits are to the majority rather than the few.

And when you get to the 'Mentality that drives their actions is inconsistent with the principles of a stable society', I would ask:

"Why is a stable society the desired end?"

After all, if everyone were dead or(Alternately) denied free will, that would be the ultimate stable society.

Because uncertainty is scary and uncomfortable, and recent generations have this mindset that the world should be easy and comfortable.

  3. What do you see as being the difference between a whistle and a cat-call?

Your comparison doesn't stand up.  "Wow, he's a hunk" is something you say privately to the friend who is with you -- it's not a forward or uninvited comment made to said hunk.

You know in movies when two guys would be hanging out and a woman would walk by, and one of the guys would do a two-note whistle? That was the kind of whistle I was referring to.

A cat-call is baically all the rest; the "heyyyyy sexyyyyyyyyy"s, the "come on babe's"s, and so forth.

Then there's honking. That is the one I encounter most frequently. Walking down the sidewalk and hearing a car give you the double honk.

  4. Going back to OT. There where some interesting points made.

What do feminists hope to achieve in their movements? What can be defined as offensive? Are those who are offended in the minority or majority of their demographics (ex. are the majority of females offended by whistling?)

I am a woman, and I personally find whistles less offensive than cat-calls. I think of whistles of the guy equivalent of "Wow, he's a hunk."

  5. Kinda playing devils advocate, kinda just thinking. I notice the ones that say purchasing and stocking items in their kitchen which are against their religious ethics is okay for a guest with a close relationship, each one puts the cutoff at alcohol.

If I was going to stock items for people, I don't see a beer as any different than a coffee. I might even argue that a beer is actually healthier for you than a coffee. I would even argue that beer was debatably allowed under the original WoW and wasn't tacked on until later, and so coffee could be the grosser violation. That being said I assume the reason behind the cut off the drug caffeine (tea and coffee) doesn't alter your state of mind like alcohol can, and so it is seen as the worse substance. Am I wrong?

My father is a recovering alcoholic. He used to yell about just about everything (he wouldn't hit us, though. Got to give credit where credit is due.). Same with my grandfather.

I work at a grocery store, and sometimes have to clean up after a customer drops a bottle of alcohol. Just the smell will trigger memories of my father punching walls, of my grandfather yelling at my father because he was TOTALLY okay to drive, and of being told I'm a lost cause and will never amount to anything. Coffee does not trigger those memories.

  6. I personally have none.

I frankly don't understand the sentiment.  I don't understand how somebody who is proud of having the power to choose to wear next-to-nothing feel that the power to choose to wear the entire window-drapes is repressive.

The main argument of the body-shaming is that if you liked your body, you'd show it off, and because you're hiding it (i.e dressing modestly), you must hate it.

Counter-argument: you have a gorgeous, diamond studded, skillfully crafted bracelet. You really like it because it's pretty, and you are very proud of it. Would you wear it all the time, or would you say there's a time and a place to wear it?

Are not people more precious than bracelets?

  7. One true church with exclusive authority is non-doctrine? What about the "racist" teachings in the scriptures? Are those non-doctrine?

I agree with you that half-truths are effectively leading people away from God. You're interpretations of what qualifies as a half-truth seems a bit askew.

How about things like, love your neighbor means total tolerance of sinful behavior, or the prophet is fallible so we can pick and choose what we follow, or following the prophet means your a mindless sheep, or the leaders of the church are fallible so that means the church is under condemnation, or nobody's perfect so we don't have to worry about it if we're not doing our home teaching, or pornography isn't that bad of a sin because it's so common, etc., etc.

I have never known anyone that translated "the one true church with exclusive authority" into "we're better than you, neener neener" and the implication that there's a half-truth in there leading people away from God is a half-truth in itself. I am also not aware of anyone who took some of the mistaken thoughts about race and the priesthood once taught (now disavowed) and turned into the spawns of Satan from it. The imperfection of our leaders does not lead us away from God. If we humbly follow those He has set to guide us we will be blessed and brought closer to Him, in spite of imperfections they may have.

I worded my post poorly. I apologize.

There are parts of the scriptures that do seem to be somewhat racist/xenophobic. Where they intended to be that way? I don't know.

I have seen some members who have the "neener neener" attitude towards members of other faiths. Then again, I have also met people who think they are above the rules, or that work is for poor people. They are not common (from my observations), but they do exist. And unfortunately, Satan is using the few to stir bitter feelings towards many.

  8. I'm not sure that someone that has this on his homepage of his blog would be someone I would be following to learn and understand more about Mormonism:

I have deep love for the LDS church, for its members, and for its former members.  At present, I consider myself to be an unorthodox, unorthoprax Mormon.  I believe in many of the central, non-distinctive moral teachings within Mormonism (e.g., love, kindness, charity, forgiveness, faith, hope), but either have serious doubts about, or no longer believe many of the fundamental LDS church truth claims (e.g., anthropomorphic God, “one true church with exclusive authority,” that the current LDS church prophet receives privileged communications from God, that The Book of Mormon and The Book of Abraham are translations, polygamy, racist teachings in the Book of Mormon, that ordinances are required for salvation, proxy work for the dead).

Half-truths are by far one of the most (if not the most) effective ways of leading away from God. Satan knows this, which is why there's nondoctern (like the racist teachings and the "our church is better than your's") listed alongside docterne (like proxy work for the dead, The Book of Mormon being a translation.)

(I appologize for any spelling mistakes/noncoherent thoughts; I just got home from work and my bed is calling my name.)

  9. I want to do a background check on a person. There are so many on-line services available that I don't know which one is Good, Better or Best.

If I am going to spend $$$, I want the Best.

Anyone here at the Forum ever use one of these on-line background check services?

    Background check for...

Screening a potential roommate? Hireing for a small company? Seeing if your next door neighbor has any bad history?

The proccess is different (in some states) depending on the reason.

  10. It has been several months. They've said they've talked to some people in their ward for advice, but they've all said to use poison, and they don't want to do that. They don't want to call an exterminator, because they think all exterminator will do is set traps, wheich they can do themselves (but have not for about a month.) I'm super tempted to call the health and saftey department on them (or maybe APS, as they do have a son there who's autistic), but I feel like I'd be a backstabber if I do (for many reasons).

I'm thinking of sending them, their ward executive secretary (he's the only one in their ward I have the e-mail address for, he might be able to pass it on to their bishop, right?), and my bishopric an e-mail saying they have a month to get things straightened up before I take action aka call and report.

Do you think that would be too mean?

  11. Question, do you think I should talk to their ward about having someone keep an eye on them? They (my parents) are a bit creeped by the rats/mice (I think they have both), but have no real motivation to do much more than the basic snappy traps (baited with peanutbutter).

Edit: I talked to them. They said straight up they don't want to call an exterminator. UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!! </frustration>

  12. Their doberman doesn't like cats.

I'll talk to them about calling an exterminator, but I have a sneaking suspicion they will not want to because it can be pricy. Perhaps if I remind them that treatment for the bubonic plague is even more expensive...

By the way, they first saw rats in November. They didn't tell me about this when I visited for Christmas, and it was only when I asked what that noise was that I found out that they have *guests*. So maybe they arn't bothered by them?

  13. I recently found out that my parent's house has a few *ahem* visitors. I was able to convince them to set traps, but they don't want to do anything else (like poison) because they are afraid the dog will eat it.

Anyone have any advice for getting rid of them? (if this is in the wrong forum, mods feel free to move it)

  14. We had a lesson once in Relief Society about missions. One sister said that she, several years ago, turned in her mission papers and got a rejection letter. She went to nursing school, completed the program, and was about to accept a really good position that she knew would never be offered to her again when her mother suggested she submit her mission papers again. She got her mission call, served a mission, and came home and took a not-as-glamourous position (I don't remember what it was, or even if it was in the same field).

Point of this story; It might not be that the Lord is telling him "no", it could be that the Lord is saying "not at this time".

  15. I look and sound almost exactly like my mother. Who looks and sounds almost like her mother. Who looks and sounds almost like her mother... and I assume it keeps going back.

(It's REALLY scary when your grandmother (your mom's mom) mistakes you for your mother on the phone.)
