About Me

Hello! :)

I am a Roman rite Catholic, but I've also attended the Ruthenian Catholic rite and, especially, the Ukrainian Catholic rite for a decent portion of my life. If you're trying to learn more about Catholicism, or just want to talk about it, feel free to message me. :) For independent research, I'd strongly recommend Catholic Answers (https://www.catholic.com) and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which you can view for free online via the USCCB (http://ccc.usccb.org/flipbooks/catechism/index.html) or the Vatican (http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/_INDEX.HTM). EWTN (http://www.ewtn.com/multimedia/) can be useful as well!

I'm in the field of film, so I can talk about ideas about film, art, and some specific movements and films. I'm also decently capable in drawing (hoping to soon get better in painting!) and writing/screenwriting, though I'm working on getting better!

If you're new to film study, and you want to get started on more-than-just-Contemporary-Hollywood-films, here's some I'd recommend (as far as I can remember, these are all clean :) )!

Older Hollywood

  • Safety Last! (1923) - A classic of early cinema
  • Citizen Kane (1941) - Hailed by some as the greatest film of all time
  • Fantasia (1941) - Arguably Walt Disney's greatest achievement in film
  • It's a Wonderful Life (1946) - Capra's famed Christmas story with a Christian message
  • Singin' in the Rain (1952) - The Classic musical with Gene Kelly
  • Duck Amuck (1953) - A self-reflexive, 4th-wall-breaking animated short
  • Funny Face (1957) - A beautiful musical with Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire
  • North by Northwest (1959) - A Hitchcock Thriller starring Cary Grant
  • Pyscho (1960) - one of the most famous horror films and incredibly influential on the genre (but it's not too intense for modern audiences, so don't worry :) )

A Few Movements & Foreign Films

  • A Trip to the Moon (1902, George Méliès) - France. Among the first fantasy films
  • The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920, Robert Weine) - Germany. From German Expressionism, which focused on portraying the world through a sharp, striking, expressive lens of distress; was hugely influential on Hollywood horror films
  • The Fall of the House of Usher (1928, Jean Epstein) - France. (Based off of works by Poe) From French Impressionism, which hinged on the idea of "photogenie," the idea that objects have their own life once they've been photographed; a strong focus on portraying emotion and the interior life of a person
  • Autumn Mists (1929, Dimitri Kirsanoff) - France. French Impressionism (less of a narrative than Usher)
  • Play Time (1967, Jacques Tati) - France. A meandering, loosely plotted film that has a rich background filled with visual gags
  • Ohayô (1959, Yasujirô Ozu) - Japan. A calm film that simply captures the everyday (something not common to American cinema); notice the low camera height on most of the shots (The title's English translation is Good Morning)
  • Spirited Away (2001, Hayao Miyazaki) - Japan. An animated film from Studio Ghibli

"Oh, how painful it is to Me that souls so seldom unite themselves to Me in Holy Communion. I wait for souls, and they are indifferent toward Me. I love them tenderly and sincerely, and they distrust Me. I want to lavish My graces on them, and they do not want to accept them. They treat Me as a dead object, whereas My Heart is full of love and mercy. In order that you may know at least some of My pain, imagine the most tender of mothers who has great love for her children, while those children spurn her love. Consider her pain. No one is in position to console her. This is but a feeble image and likeness of My love" (Diary 1447).
