  1. Beauty of the internet. A week after the talk was given I was using quotes from it in a talk I gave today. It's nice to have access to the words so fast.
  2. Thanks for the responses. As I reflected on it more and read your responses I realized that to think the Holy Ghost didn't operate before Christ came to earth "makes reason stare" (Eliza Snow, O My Father). And while I'm not real clear on what was going with the HG while Christ was on the earth, he surely would of been available to those such as the Nephi of 3 Nephi to help him prepare for the Savior's visit there.
  3. What does it mean in John 7 where it says: because clearly Nephi tells us that the Holy Ghost was operating well before this time?Nephi 1: I remember something being said about the Holy Ghost not operating while Christ was on the earth, if so, would that have been just during the 3 years of his ministry?
  4. In the same vein as LM's reply. The church was in its infancy back then and required more divine help in getting started and keeping things going. Today a missionary can go to the MTC and in a few weeks be conversed enough to go out into the mission field. I see no particular reason for such missionaries to speak with the gift of tongues in that case. There may be odd instances where it could happen though. Our Father, just like our parents here on earth, will help until we have sufficiently learned enough to take care of ourselves... more than that would not be to our betterment.
  5. I think this thread is a prime example of D&C 89:3 There is just always someone that has to know how far they can go before it is too far.
  6. Perhaps, but it seems that which is easy to confess is easy to repeat. How hard is it to confess to a box with ears, than a real person sitting there looking at you, even if there is compassion and sorrow in his eyes? I do think there is a very good reason Heavenly Father has us confess to our leaders and not to a box.
  7. Well I found a digitized copy of "Outlines of Ecclesiastical History" by BH Roberts online and on page 314 in notes he has the quote by Joseph Smith. Seems it first appeared in the Milennial Star. vol XVI, p. 220. Anyway the link to the book is here, I'm too lazy to retype the whole quote: Outlines of Ecclesiastical History
  8. Did anybody watch CSI last night? We made it into another show. The first suspect they take in for questioning turns out to be a mormon who stole $10,000 from the church and was in Vegas hoping to win enough back to replace it so it wouldn't be caught. As the sideline, he stashes his son, seems he's a single dad too, at an ex-girlfriends where he gets killed So how would someone steal $10,000 from the church and not get caught fairly quickly??
  9. You know Moksha, God has always been described as flesh and bone while we as flesh and blood.. what would the point of been to make such a difference, if there wasn't a difference?
  10. My son in law keeps bringing this up. When they get their books unpacked after their move soon, I'll have to borrow it see how far I can get.
  11. Romans 14:13
  12. What do you mean by this?
  13. Did you see the reply in post #50? See what 1 Corinthians 15:50 says.
  14. The point there were trying not to leave a paper trail of tests and doing it off the cuff and quickly. Otherwise I'm sure there are much better ways of testing it.
  15. Maybe you should put that question in the mysteries you want answered thread :)
  16. Wow Dale, I hate to say, I have no idea what you're trying to say Dale is talking about the ongoing question about whether the Book of Mormon is a "tight" translation or a "loose" one. Essentially, it's a question of whether Joseph dictated the words precisely as they were revealed to him or whether he was allowed some latitude in expressing the thought. To put it another way, was he relaying the letter of the law or the spirit of the law. Thoughtful and well-educated scholars come down on both sides of the matter- while most of the membership simply doesn't care. Honos
  17. Thanks, that was a very *good* reply :)
  18. Just out of curiosity, gVr, what does "tdmg" mean?
  19. Here's a link to FAIR that helps explain this too: Textual Issues If you find yourself dealing with many issues or just for your general knowledge, I'd suggest FAIR and Neal A. Maxwell Institute. FAIR is the Foundation for Apologetic Information and Research and the Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship is through BYU. These two sites can help to answer most questions/concerns that challengers question. Edit: ahh I see Isaac beat me to it :)
  20. Well if you don't mind me answering this, as this has always been my understanding also... Brigham Young tells us, as shown in Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young: Also to quote the scripture used above:
  21. This seems to say that both the righteousness of the people and Christ reigning keeps Satan bound. It is not our righteousness that starts the millennium, but the righteousness of the people during it, whatever religion they are, will help to keep Satan bound.
  22. Hmm, this reminds me of when Christ came to the Nephites and there was 400 years afterwards of righteousness. I would say that their level of righteousness kept Satan at bay. So that concept makes sense to me, but then after 1000 years Satan is to be release from his bondage to have one last go at us, what causes that then I wonder? Same as before, some people opening the door?
  23. Thank you, cgrant, that's just what how I needed to hear it.
  24. This is why I have a hard time with it for Emma. Plural marriage was her undoing, it was something she struggled against and as was mentioned she denied afterwards. She is not someone that to me epitomizes "calling and election made sure." Good thing its not me doing the judging.I don't have a problem with the concept in general, although I don't feel there are many that actually get it confirmed on them while in this life, to be striving for it is the goal though.
  25. I couldn't find a mouth dropping smilie, but all I can say is WOW, now I can hardly wait for it!!
