Misshalfway Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 I need to talk about the Savior and the atonement. I need to understand it better. I need to expand my understanding and depth of belief and understanding. I can't explain why. Just hoping that whatever insights and testimony you all may have will help. Anything and everything is welcome. Perhaps scriptures or talks or experiences that have helped you. I suppose the sky is the limit. :) Thank you. Quote
VisionOfLehi Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 One thing that makes the atonement mean so much to me personally is that Christ did not just suffer the punishment of my sins that I don't have to. He suffered for all of my pains and afflictions and infirmities, so that I don't have to, so that I can give them up to Him. And so that He knows me even better... That no matter what I go through, He has felt it as well. That time I scraped my knee and almost needed stitches? He felt that. That time I had a panic attack that made me feel like I was dying? He felt that. That time I was angry and put a hole in the wall? He felt that. The list goes on and on. Any time I'm feeling sad, or lonely, or scared, or angry, or hurt, or in pain, or weak, or ill, He felt it as well. 12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities. roytucker Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Here is a slightly non-standard, but nonetheless scriptural, snippet of my perspective:The Father sent His Son for a purpose, to do all things which the Father commanded Him. He was obedient and by so doing became one with the Father and will inherit all the Father has. We are asked to believe in the saving power of Christ and by so doing He becomes OUR Father. We are likewise asked to do all that the Father (Christ) commands to the end that we become one with Christ as He is one with His Father. At this point, we become joint-heirs in inheriting all the Father has.Everything else is just the fine print :)Sample References: John 5:19-20; 8:29; 10:30; 14:8-9; 17:4, 22-23; Mosiah 3:8,19; 5:7-8Roy Quote
Moksha Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Here is the gist: Because of Jesus' atonement, we are granted salvation by the grace of God. Quote
tubaloth Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Here are two. The Atonement and Our Part in It - A. Theodore TuttleThis talk I read on some trip (in the car for a while) I don't remember WHAT it taught me (i haven't read it in a while) I just remember as I read it, it all kind of hit me on the Atonement works. I don't remember it being deep, just take it slow. And then a good old McConkie talk. What Think Ye of Salvation by Grace? - Bruce R. Justice Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Here is a different angle. Because of the fall of Adam, mankind fell from being immortal and in the presence of God, to a place of mortality and where God doesn't always exist. If you work backwards from there and define mortality: blood, sickness, pain, suffering, disease, hardships, toil for food, thorns, loss of limb, trials, and possibly the mose severe, death. You can see everything that the Atonement reverses or overcomes. These things pertain to our physical bodies quickened by blood that He shed to overcome. And, through the Atonement He can extend grace and mercy to those who try with real intent to live the Gospel and repent. Grace and mercy are needed components of forgiveness which lead to eternal life and exaltation. No small feat, and the rewards are infinate and eternal to those who come to Jesus Christ. Quote
