The BoM is supposed to contain the "fullness" of the Gospel. But, when I read it, all I find is 99% traditional Christianity and about 1% settling controversies hotly debated in 19th Century New England (infant baptism, mode of baptism, atonement, nature of God, origin of native americans, indians looked jewish-how come?,) and prophesies of things that had already happened (in unprecedented detail) and precious few prophesies about anything that hadn't happened at the time of JS.

But I digress. I also notice that what makes Mormonism DISTINCT from other religions is NOT what is in the BoM, but what is in the DC and especially in the Book of Abraham--inferences about eternal marriage, many Gods, man's place in preexistance, that more than one god created the earth.

My question--why were the "gold" plates so carefully hidden away, when the Papyrus, which served the same function as the plates allowed to just kick around the Met?

The papyrus were not given to JS by an Angel, right? He bought them. So why would an Angel take them away?

What the point in asking that question?

You know the answers as well as anyone else. If the BoM and BoA were frauds, Joseph couldn't actually produce plates that would stand up to scutiny so he had to concoct a way out of it but didn't think that in the foreseeable future anyone would be able to really translated ancient Egyptian and so he didn't bother with a way out....

...or

It happened the way he said it did.

Would there be a safe place to store real gold plates? Can you imagine how much those things would have been worth?

Cal,

Yep, the first sounds more likely. That's the nature of religion. You are asked to believe something that cannot be seen, felt, tasted or heard... only inferred. You are asked to believe that what we actually to see and touch and hear, is not ultimate reality, but only a screen for the true nature of things. It seems to me that throughout mankinds history most of mankind has accepted that the world we actually "know" is not true and complete reality. It seems that believing in something beyond us is part of man's intrinsic nature and that not believing goes against our natural inclinations.

Because it's a convenient excuse for the lack of ability to produce somethingn that never existed.
LOL.

Thank heavens we all must die someday and know for sure....with no room for doubt.

In the mean time...life is too short to waste time with things you don't believe in....so get busy and start doing something you do believe in....positive...fruitful... uplifting...kinds of things.....and bettering of your own life....short as it may be.

Peace--exactly---treat this life like it DOES matter, contrary to what you have been saying in your other posts!

For those who don't have a 'prayer' in the next life...this is all you have....make the most of it... ;)

Well, it would have been a convenient excuse, except JS never claimed that the scrolls were taken away by the angel...just the plates.

He really should have said the scrolls were taken...it would have prevented all the Book of Abraham controversy.

But, I'm not a prophet, so what do I know?

Once you die...you will know 'why', 'how', 'if', 'if not', 'who', 'when', 'where', etc, etc,.....the discussion is all about finding what you consider falsehoods, discrepencies, lies....etc...

When you have personages visit you from the otherside...a lot of these problems are explained away in very easy ways.

Unfortunately most must find their way through faith....many do not have faith....so they will not know until they DIE!!!

Going slowly now so you can understand.

Peace thinks that one day, perhaps when we die, all these sorts of questions will be answered.

In the meantime, one would be better off not wasting time on unknowable and instead should focus on doing good things that have a postive return on the time/effort investment.

Does that help Trident?

Is it me, or does Peace strike anyone else as psychotic? Seriously. Ever notice after her posts she's always typing "LOL" or "LOLOL" or "LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL"? Crazy.

Peace,

Seriously. Are you on medication?

BTW,

I feel that what Cal, Bat, Sgallan, and others are doing is very positive and uplifting. I guess it's a matter of perspective.

Uplift

To raise; elevate.

To raise to a higher social, intellectual, or moral level or condition.

To raise to spiritual or emotional heights; exalt: music that uplifts the spirit

Who's spirits are they uplifting by dragging others down. Maybe others who can only feel "uplifted" by the demoralising of others and thrashing of their beilefs. Ahhhh how sweet.

I guess it's a matter of perspective.

Actually Snow....I do want people to search out the unknown, etc...but discussion and arguing doesn't seem to get anyone anywhere.

Tumbaga plates, dear. Gold-en plates. We can't have Mormons running around thinking the Gold Plates were actually made of gold. It's too implausible. Please, for future reference, place gold in quotations so that we know you know the plates were golden and not gold.

Why didn't JS just give the plates to the Smithsonian? Seems to me the Church would love to have their stamp of approval...

Why would the source material of the BoM be something to "test the faith" of its adherents, but not the BoA?
