Genesis Refutes Atheism

I was channel surfing (which is rare for me) today, and was compelled by what I think was either the spirit, or my sore thumb (from pressing the channel button repeatedly) to stop on one of those annoying christian television channels.

The lecturer (whose name was prefaced with "Dr." and that makes him smarter than me) said:

Genesis (that's in your bible. If you don't have a bible, steal one from a hotel room) refutes:

Atheism

Humanism

Dualism

Evolution

and some other stuff.

Wouldn't Genesis have to be demonstrably non-fiction to actually "refute" any of these things? It's like saying that Star Wars refutes the possibility that there are not humans on other planets. Just in case anybody is lost on this one, Star Wars isn't a story that really happened, even though it claims to have taken place a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Wait a minute, that means it really happened. I'm going to stop now, I'm getting confused.

Hmmm,

You're right but it makes me think... my main complaint about Christian TV programming is that they are mostly just blather. I don't get how some people, ala televangelists can use so many words to say so very little. LDS programming, The Spoken Word excepted, doesn't do much for me either. In both General Conference and BYU lecture series, they are so somber and robotic that though I think the message has value, I have no emotional reaction to it and thus little interest.

Oh how I wish something could be done. When will my boredom end? When?

I hear my church is pretty exciting.

Bat -

Repent you heathen, less you are forever tortured in damnation....

Not hardly. The Book of bat refutes that theory.

re·fute   Audio pronunciation of "refute" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (r-fyt)

tr.v. re·fut·ed, re·fut·ing, re·futes

   1. To prove to be false or erroneous; overthrow by argument or proof: refute testimony.

   2. To deny the accuracy or truth of: refuted the results of the poll.

Definition 2 is what we are focusing on here.

I can refute that you actually exist, now that doesn't necessarily make it true, and I probably won't convince anyone, but technically it's correct word usage.

I remain unconvinced. That's not what I was getting from the EV at all.

I know, he probably meant it as per definition one, I was being facetious.

You would make a good apologist. ;)

The Nazis were a horrid and evil political party that committed horrible deeds and I make no excuses or denials as to their reprehensible behavior... wait, you didn't mean that kind of apologist did you? :)

Seems to me that atheism, humanism, dualism, evolution...even liberal versions of Christianity refute Genesis

It is mainly science that refutes Genesis!

Can we still eat Cheerios and Teddy Grahams during meeting time while listening to the talks?
