TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY: 10 September

1837 - A meeting was held in the Kirtland Temple attended by the Prophet Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, and other leaders of the Church. Church business was transacted and the sacrament administered. (History of the Church, 2:512)

1842 - The Prophet Joseph Smith views the training of the Nauvoo Legion from a hiding place as he fears someone is waiting to arrest him from Missouri. Later that night, Emma sent a message to him saying that she felt the danger was over and for him to return home. He then secretly returned home to his family. (History of the Church, 5:161)

1845 - A mob attacks and kills Edmund Durfee in Morley’s Settlement, a small Mormon community in Hancock County, Illinois, and sets fire to the buildings in the settlement. This begins the escalation of the mob’s efforts to force the Saints to leave Illinois.

1846 - In what became known as the Battle of Nauvoo, anti-Mormon forces begin to fire on the city. Nauvoo was defended by a few remaining members of the Church and many of the new citizens who had moved to Nauvoo after purchasing homes and property from Church members as they left for the west.

1924 - Elder Boyd K. Packer, of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles, is born in Brigham City, Utah.

1933 - The Mormon Tabernacle Choir arrives in Chicago, Illinois, for the “Century of Progress” fair. They would spend the next week performing open air concerts at the fair in the Ford Symphony Gardens, two of which were broadcast nationally by CBS.

1946 - The first missionaries arrive in Costa Rica.

1961 - The First stake in Germany is organized at Berlin.

1982 - United States President Ronald Reagan tours the cannery at the Ogden Utah Area Welfare Services Center. He is hosted by President Gordon B. Hinckley of the First Presidency. President Reagan praised the volunteerism embodied in center’s operation.

1985 - The first Branch of the Church is organized on the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean.

1990 - The first missionaries arrive in Bulgaria.
