Snow Posted December 8, 2004 Report Posted December 8, 2004 Both BYU and Utah want Kyle Whittingham, Ute defensive coordinator, as head coach.Tom Smart, Deseret Morning News The man front and center is Utah defensive coordinator Kyle Whittingham. Sources say the University of Utah has pushed hard in the past 48 hours for Whittingham to replace Florida-bound Urban Meyer. Utah officials offered Whittingham the head Ute coaching job and will demand a decision by today. BYU, whose university president Cecil Samuelson and associate athletic directors Tom Holmoe, Peter Pilling and Brian Santiago completed a series of interviews Friday and Saturday, reacted to Utah's timetable Monday by rushing Whittingham to meet with an apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a mandatory step in the hiring process of the church-owned school. This tug of war, which has included discussions of money and length of a contract by both parties, should reach a conclusion today, according to informed sources close to both negotiating parties.Next thing you know they'll promise to make sure his calling and election. I demand a recount. Quote
Guest curvette Posted December 8, 2004 Report Posted December 8, 2004 Interesting. Will he stay with the sure thing, or go for what's behind curtain number one? Quote
Guest TheProudDuck Posted December 8, 2004 Report Posted December 8, 2004 Looks like Utah got him:http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,5951...5110922,00.htmlIs it just me, or is it just a little unseemly to have one of the twelve apostles of a worldwide Church drop everything to woo a potential football coach?I like good college ball as much as the next guy, but I'm reading a great book (Tom Wolfe's I Am Charlotte Simmons) which pretty much confirms my impression of what mindless overblown arrogance big-time college sports are. According to the article, it's now standard procedure in the BYU hiring process. Don't want any of them heathens influencing those upright, wholesome football players, now do we? Quote

Yes, but a necessary step to prepare them for the even more mindless overblown arrogance of the pro athletes. Quote
Snow Posted December 9, 2004 Author Report Posted December 9, 2004 Regardless of what Thomas Wolfe says, and by the way I loved his Tess of the Durbervilles, Utah got their man Whittingham and BYU didn't. Turns out I have met him - in the ward where we first lived when we got married. Quote
