Why is Sunday just a normal day?

Why? How can being outside be going against the Sabbath?

I think he may be using it as code for having the kids scatter to the winds and play with their friends all day long or even going BMXing by themselves, not that simply standing outside is inherently Sabbath breaking. Think something like saying, "No TV." for one family that means not watching the game or popping in Eagle Eye. But for the family that watches BYU Devotionals and nothing else that seems silly, what's wrong with watching BYU Devotionals?

Why would one LDS family think this is still following the sabbath while another LDS family would think not?

In general you are going to find LDS folk disagree quite a lot about just what is and isn't Sunday appropriate (I doubt this is unique to LDS folk). This is there isn't a class of pharisees to tell us how many steps we can take and various other functions (Also not unique). For LDS folks there are few hard and fast rules, things like don't shop, don't work (if it can at all be avoided) and go to church. Things like, spend the day thinking of the Savior, visiting family, visiting the sick and resting are a lot more ambiguous so members are encouraged to pray about it and apply some reasoning.

For instance, my family has a rule against video games, not because popping in Mario was the destroyer of worlds but because it was found that we (the kids) at the time would pretty much spend all day playing it, this was decided as 'not good' and instead of arguing over just how much was to much (and besides, one of us would play for our time, then the kid next would play while we watched, even if the rule was 1 hour each that meant we might find ourself staring at the idiot box for 4 or 5 hours watching Mario stomp on things) so the rule of, "No video games." Reasonings like this tend to get lost when you just state the rule (No TV or No video games).

For many religious people, just showing up at church is enough for the day to be holy. Also, many other Christians go to church on Christmas no matter what day of the week it happens to fall on. Orthodox Jews don't drive anywhere at all, nor do they cook or do any labor of any kind on their Sabbath.
