Does anyone know what the church had to say about slavery?

The LDS Church never had an official position on slavery. Several prominent LDS of the Utah period, including Brigham Young, owned slaves. In fact, Utah was the only slave Territory of the United States, ever. Following the Civil War, the Territory of Utah ceased allowing slaves, and the LDS church followed suit.

One thing to keep in mind is that there are no reports I've ever heard of where slaves owned by Mormons were ever badly mistreated.
