Whenever I've been in Primary and it is time to plan the yearly program, we give the children that are 11 and moving up to YM/YW by the next Primary program a leading role. They get to be a narrator, have several parts, or something that is special.

Do others do this???

My grand daughter, who is 11, came home last week with her part on a tiny piece of paper. It was one sentence like normally a 4 or 5 year old would have. She doesn't get to go each Sunday and I'm thinking maybe they did it because they didn't know if she'd be there for the program. What do you think?

I was thinking of saying something to the leaders.

When I was Primary President we gave the bigger roles to children we felt could handle it. Not based on age. We had some pretty smart 8 year olds that were awesome at memorizing things, so those a lot of the time went to them.

I never based the parts in the sacrament program on the age or the fact that they would be leaving Primary.

Also we tried to break down the lines of the sacrament program so that the majority of the children had a part. So if that meant that some only had one liners...that's the way it was.

I suspect you may be right that they aren't sure she would be there so they gave her a part that was not crucial to the program in case she doesn't show. Unless she is hugely upset I wouldn't say anything about it. Usually the program parts are all given out at the same time, and it would cause others hurt feelings if you insist they take a larger part away from someone else and give it to her. Personally, my kids didn't really care about the size of their parts, and as they grew older they were perfectly happy if their part was small or nonexistent.

Is she upset about her part, or are you upset about it? Have you talked to her about this?

I think it would be easy to feel "off about it" but I am sure it will work out in the end. One thought I had was that perhaps she doesnt like talking in church -is she quiet in primary? And so maybe they gave her a small part too so that she would feel comfortable?
