larosahugo Posted November 7, 2009 Report Posted November 7, 2009 Hi, my name is Hugo, and I have just registered in lds.net. So I'm learning my way into being active in this site. Thank you. In case you know any answers, my question is: Should people on Social Security benefits alone pay tithing? Thanks for your answers, I look forward to read them. Sincerely, Hugo Quote
Mahone Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 (edited) A small excerpt from the church handbook of instructions (this does not break copyright). All Church members who have income should pay tithing, with the following exceptions:1. Members entirely dependent on Church welfare assistance.2. Full-time missionaries. (However, missionaries should pay tithing on personal income beyond what they receive for their support from families and others.)So the short answer is yes. To get the long answer, the bishop of your ward / branch will be able to help you further. There are other exceptions. Edited November 8, 2009 by Mahone Quote
larosahugo Posted November 8, 2009 Author Report Posted November 8, 2009 I just read an article that in the book of leviticus those israelites who possessed only 9cows were exempt from paying tithing. The reasoning? Because they were within the poverty level, that is, they didn't have enough? In sum, because it would be unjust and plain ridiculous to get tithed on only 9 cows, because the truth is that 9 is not a complete ten.Nevertheless, I'm open to suggestions.Sincerely,Hugo Quote
pam Posted November 8, 2009 Report Posted November 8, 2009 Are we looking to pay tithing by the letter of the law or the spirit of the law? Quote

larosahugo Posted November 8, 2009 Author Report Posted November 8, 2009 Your answer has been the best I have read. I'm happy with that. May the Lord bless you! Sincerely, Hugo P.S.: For the letter kills, and the spirit vivifies. Quote
Maya Posted November 9, 2009 Report Posted November 9, 2009 Hi Hugo and welcome. I should add a blogg on titing in my profile... I adh a time I only got very little social security money... with 2 kids it really was not much... I payed titings and recieved blessings! :) So officially: Dear Newbie: Welcome to LDS.net. You will find here an ecclectic mix of LDS and some non-members. While the site is dedicated to the Gospel, and to promoting the Church to a world that often does not understand us, we also make room for conversations about current events, and about social and cultural practices within the Church. If your main desire is to learn about the Church, consider starting with the "Learn About Mormonism" forums. For more advanced teachings, that will often include a variety of perspectives, some non-LDS, consider the Gospel section of forums. While you are welcome to all main sections, be aware this site makes room for a variety of opinions and personalities. Some posters can be passionate about their views, and occasionally more so about them than about the souls of visitors. If you find something particularly offensive, feel free to make a report by clicking the appropriate tab. Quote
