How Do You React When Someone Asks You Your Religion?

My response tends to be largely determined by my mood. In other words, do I feel like being serious or not. If not, then my response would start with something like 'I go to the queso verde mano muerte church'. And then I might explain what that would be if it existed. Then I would get to the serious answer wherein I would be completely open. If they for some reason wanted to tell me that they thought that I was out of character for a member, then I would explain myself. Similarly, if they suddenly felt the urge to argue a few points then the gloves come off and the Bible comes out until I get bored. Not necessarily the best response, but the one I tend to give.

Anyway, the 'funny man' part is quite rare so I usually turn to the serious answer.

In many places, it would be considered rude to ask the question of what faith tradition a person identifies with. In other places it is a social custom to do so, in order to find out if a person is acceptable to associate with or in some cases to begin to proselytization process.

Personally I have disliked such a question because it seem to divide people more than it join them.

For a long time I was always embarrassed about being Mormon. I'm not sure why. I always told people that I didn't belong to any particular faith and shrugged it off. It's only been recently that I've been much more open about my beliefs. Most people are surprised and then I get the whole "Wow, I didn't think you were Mormon" etc etc. Which is fair enough I suppose, within the last couple years, I have quit smoking and drinking.

I am upfront. Granted, I've only been a Latter-day Saint for a few weeks now, so I haven't had many people ask me.

But I did have a funny situation at work. I work at a prison, and I was working in the segregation unit, and one of the officers I was working with was drinking a Monster "Java Irish Cream." He ended up offering me some and I said "I can't drink coffee products." And he said, "everyone can drink coffee." I said "no, I'm a Mormon." Another officer asked, "what does that have anything to do with that? You can't have coffee because you're Mormon?"

The coffee drinking officer said, "yeah they can't drink anything with caffeine in it because caffeine is a drug and they can't have drugs." I went on to clear up that I can have caffeine just not coffee or tea, and yes I can't smoke drugs.
