(emphasis mine)

May I ask why?

I think the number one reason why religious folk contemplating being suddenly atheist picture themselves devoid of a moral compass is because right now our moral compass is built upon the foundation of our religion. We contemplate the removal of that foundation and picture a house of cards collapsing without considering that if our religion hadn't been there to form a basis of our moral compass then something else would have been such as social mores, a philosopher, or what have you.

Also combine that with the the whole, "I'd be a beer swilling, tobacco smoking, porn watching, living in sin livin', taking the name of the Lord in vain person!" We tend not to think so harshly of others, for instance you drink beer Godless and I don't really think anything of it, I certainly don't think of you as a horrible person, but the thought of me drinking beer results in feelings of disgust. Why the disgust? A viscreal reaction stemming from an inability to properly remove my current self from the hypothetical self. In my mind I'm still violating covenants even though in the hypothetical I didn't make them or don't believe in them.
