30 Behold, the Lord hath forbidden this thing; wherefore, the Lord God hath given a commandment that all men should have charity, which charity is love. And except they should have charity they were nothing. Wherefore, if they should have charity they would not suffer the laborer in Zion to perish.

All men should have charity

The antidote to priestcraft is charity, which Mormon called the “pure love of Christ.” Those who serve with charity do so with a pure heart, having no desire but to build up the kingdom of God and establish his righteousness. The charitable person is without envy, pride, or concern for personal honors (see Moroni 7:456, 47). Charity is the anthem of Zion, priestcraft the psalm of Babylon, Elder Dallin H. Oaks counseled the Church that “it is not enough to serve God with all of our might and strength. He who looks into our hearts and knows our minds demands more than this. In order to stand blameless before God at the last day, we must also serve him with all our heart and mind….Such service must be free of selfish ambition. It must be motivated only by the pure love of Christ.” (CR, October 1984, p. 16.)
