eleigh1977 Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 I was asked to speak on this topic, this coming Sunday. I got nothing! I have had thoughts to mull over, and I have read some scriptures and plan to read some older Ensign articles....but really, all I have is that it's one of the best ways to bond and unite a family. Other than that I have nothing! I have to fill 16 minutes, and I have one thought. So I thought I'd come read your thoughts about family prayer...ideas and such. PLEASE post soon, so I can start forming something valuable to share. I am not interested in being a lame speaker! Thanks in advance for all of your help and/or insights. Quote

Ray Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 eleigh, I'm pretty sure most people in your ward would rather hear what YOU think or how YOU feel about family prayer, rather than hear you quote some other people who talk about family prayer. Of course, if the thoughts of someone else have influenced your thoughts or feelings about family prayer, it would be helpful to quote those thoughts while expressing what you think or how you feel about them, but still, even then those thoughts would be your thoughts, and your feelings, about family prayer. And just in case that's not enough to get you going, think about some particular moments when you had a thought or experience concerning family prayer, such as a sad thought you once had about not being able to have family prayer, or a happy thought you once had about being able to have family prayer. Or, you could talk about some of the things you talked to God about, or some of the things you learned about your family by what they talked to God about, while having family prayer. Anyway, the main thought I'm trying to convey to you is that each and every person has their own thoughts and feelings about everything, and in this instance, it is YOUR opportunity to share your thoughts and feeling with others concerning what you think and feel about family prayer. And btw, as much as you can, it would also be good to try to avoid reading, as you share your own thoughts and feelings. Quote
BenRaines Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 I agree with Ray. Don't go up and read a few old articles from church magazines. There is a good talk posted on www.ldsmag.com about the seven deadly sins of sacrament talks. A great resourse as you prepare a talk. I have the opportunity to speak in church once a month and I know from personal experience and many sacrament meetings that I have been in that when someone gets up and reads their talk most tune out. When I prepare a talk I prepare bullet points and use them to keep me on track. I have ideas associated with those bullet points and make sure I cover all the important stuff. Also if the speaker before me goes on too long I can drop a point or two. I do not believe in going over the time allotted. If I were to do so everyone is mentally headed for the door.Ben Quote
eleigh1977 Posted March 20, 2006 Author Report Posted March 20, 2006 Thanks for the articles and thoughts...the talk went very well. Quote
