The title might have been somewhat alarming.

Here's the thing. I have the New Testament on tape and play it once a week. 12 tapes = 2 per day. I just bought the BoM on CD and was going to alternate weeks. Am I cheating by just popping a tape or CD into the player, rather than sitting down and reading it properly.

I like listening to it, because I can get my housework done or paint my toy soldiers at the same time. I also find it soothing. I like sitting on my chair with my eyes closed and let the words flow around me. The NT tapes are read by Alexander Scourby.

Just wanted to know if anyone else listens to the scriptures on CD or Tape and if its a good or bad way to do it? Obviously if someone tells me to read a particular verse for something, I will crack open my actual scriptures and read it properly or if I am taking down notes.

Thanks

I use to listen to the MP3s supplied by the church at work, but I found I wasn't paying attention to the words. I personally prefer setting aside 20 - 30 minutes a day for scripture study.

Toy soldiers eh? Sounds like warhammer or something similar?

Are you cheating? No, not at all. I find that I retain more when I hear, then when I read.

I subscribe to an online service that sends me daily scripture readings. You can read them from your email, or go online to read or listen or both. I do both.

For anyone who may be interested in this service - here is the link to their site: LDS SCRIPTURES | Read The Scriptures

Yes it's warhammer. Ogre Kingdoms and Orcs to be exact.

I think it is fine to listen on CD, but I think you get something more from it when you are reading from the actual book. I agree with trying to set some time aside to actually read them as well.

I also find it easier to listen and do feel as though I take in more that way. I do like the idea of listening and following along with the words on the page. I might give that a go and see how I get on.

Oh! Iggy, Thank you for the link. That was most useful. I signed up for that.

You are welcome. I first discovered this site, shortly after they started. They have added so much more than just the Standard works.

Think I just may sign up for Ensign conference issue - yeah, I know that is at lds.org, but this is sent to me via my email.

No, you are not cheating, you are an auditory learner.

My daughter is one, too. We had struggled for so long for her to pass her accelerated reading tests, they are all written. You read a book, you take a test. She was flunking them all. How could this happen? we thought.

Until one day I was at work (in my library) and was looking at the children's section, thinking about her, and DING! audio books. (where is that facepalm picture when I need it?)

I got her a book on audio and a hard copy. She listens, she reads along to fulfill the assignment, and yes she gets 100's all the time. Auditory learner. Awesome.

My youngest son is like that. If you read him a story a couple times, he can then recite it back to you word for word, yet he finds it very difficult to learn new words. My son has Autism though, so that could explin that. I do actually find it easier to remember things better when its spoken than when it's written down.

nope nothing wrong with that, altho if you want to go back over something or if you want to focus in on somehting in the scriptures its probably more of a pain to do that with just audio.

I imagine that the more senses and mental exercises involved when studying the scriptures, the more it's likely to get memorized.

I think it all boils down to how effective it is. For me it'd be cheating because it'd just be background noise and if I let myself use that as a way to claim "Hey, I did my scripture study today!" and didn't do it in a more effective way I'd be cheating myself out of what the scriptures have to offer.

Just to say; If I have to study for a class or have particular scriptures to read, I will use my proper scriptures. I just like listening to the scriptures being read. I also like the idea of listening, while reading along. Listening while reading along, I feel helps me remember better. I do however mostly use the tapes as background noise. If something catches my ear though, I do go to my scriptures and look it up.
