How long excommunication lasts is different in every case. 11 years ago my husband was excommunicated. After one year he reapplied for baptism and was denied. He did not reapply for until this year. I'm excited to say that he will be baptized on April 23. It has been a long road for us, but mainly that long road was his doing. He did not even try and get rebaptized after that first time when he was denied. But you know what? This entire time he has been active at church, many people didn't even know he was not a member. When we announced his baptism there were two responses, people who were pleased and thrilled for him, and people who were surprised because they already thought he was a member.

When the high council was held before his excommunication, he received a letter from the stake president which said "A high council is being held on your behalf." I knew instantly that this was ON HIS BEHALF. For him. A service to him and to our entire family. If sins are quietly swept under the carpet then repentance is never accomplished. How do you gain exaltation if you have covered your sins instead of repenting from them. Is it possible to have an eternal family in such a case? I knew that painful as it would be, it was a turning point. Before, unknown to me, I would not have an eternal marriage. With the excommunication and repentance process, the Eternal Family I thought I had could be a reality. Church courts are truly courts of love. Let me assure you that every member of the high council hugged my husband and expressed their love to him. It is not about condemnation and shunning, it is about helping one back into God's presence, and I testify it is a loving, encouraging, and helpful experience. It is nothing to fear, there will be pain, but there will be comfort and healing. It's a good path to take when needed. And.. who knows? It may not be needed in your case, but you need to sit and talk with your bishop, and generally I have found bishops to be wonderfully helpful, many times I have walked in their office feeling like a dog, and come out feeling like a child of god.
