ruthiechan Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 How do you know if you have soil that's been sitting too long moist? I have a bag of soil that was on the side of the house. I started putting some of it into a pot but the farther down I got the more moist it became (due to it just sitting there after a bunch of rain). How do I know if the soil has been sitting there wet too long? The last thing I wanna do is repot my mini roses and my aloe vera with soil that'll do them harm. Quote
UrbanFool Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 Smell it! You can't miss the smell of bad potting mix. If it smells like clean dirt, it's probably fine. Quote
ruthiechan Posted April 15, 2011 Author Report Posted April 15, 2011 Derp. Now that you said it, appears to be a quite obvious thing to do. Quote
Blocky Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 hehe derp. I know my potting soil is no longer a good idea when it's infested with centipedes. I really dislike those things. Quote
cj06 Posted April 19, 2011 Report Posted April 19, 2011 can potting soil go bad ? we just got some weird name potting soil that has lost of bat poo and chicken poo in it and seems to work good , mom used to use another famous brand and nothing grew ! Quote
UrbanFool Posted April 19, 2011 Report Posted April 19, 2011 bat guano is supposed to be wonderful. I should think you could bake the soil to get rid of the centipedes and their eggs. I have little hairy fungus on my pottlings at the moment, and they have brand new potting soil. Not sure what's up with that. What brand did your mother try? Quote
cj06 Posted April 19, 2011 Report Posted April 19, 2011 mom was partial to miracle grow , and the stuff that the wife found was in the corner at lowes , cant remember the name but it was a lot cheaper than miracle grow ! Quote
UrbanFool Posted April 19, 2011 Report Posted April 19, 2011 Well, if it didn't grow anything, it wasn't worth it! Quote
