Jenda Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 Tao is right. And not just maggots, but leeches, too. I remember a time when I was working at the hospital when a girl came in who had amputated her finger climbing over a fence. They brought the finger in and reattached it, and every 6 or 8 hours, or so, the doctors came in and attached leeches to it to drain the excess blood out that got pumped in but had no way to get out because the blood vessels and lymph systems in the finger hadn't started working yet. Without bleeding it, the finger would have died. Yes, God did know what he was doing when he created certain creatures in his creation. Quote

I don't know...I just remember them saying that they were cleaned or something...maybe they didn't use the word sterilized. I guess they would want to make sure the maggots were clean as possible, right? If they just took them off a dead dog and put them on Herod's testicles, then Herod might get some new sickness from the dog?I'm not sure I'll look it up. Guest Taoist_Saint Posted March 12, 2004 Report Posted March 12, 2004 British doctors to prescribe maggots Sat Feb 21, 7:43 AM ET LONDON (AFP) - Patients in Britain suffering from infected wounds will be able to take home a pot of maggots as part of a scheme launched that allows doctors to prescribe them for treatment. Local doctors, known as general practitioners or GPs, around Britain will now be able to offer patients a prescription of maggots to help heal wounds and avoid lengthy stays in hospital. The scheme was launched after pioneering research at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, south Wales, showed that sterile maggots can heal wounds faster than conventional medicine. The idea is not a new one, in the First World War victims recovered from no man's land were said to have had maggots put on their wounds to devour the bacteria. But from Friday, nurses will for the first time go to patients' homes and apply them to the wound, sealing them into the infection with a dressing, leaving the maggots to feed on the dead tissue. After three days, the maggots, who leave healthy tissue alone, are removed from the wound and reapplied if necessary. "Making this treatment available to patients in their own homes can prevent the need for a protracted hospital stay and reduce the risk of individuals developing a hospital-acquired infection," said the scheme's director, Steve Thomas. </span>So there you have it. I don't know if by "sterile maggots" they meant that all maggots are naturally sterile, or if the maggots need to somehow be sterilized.Oh...I just found another article...It says:<span style=\'color:green\'>Previously, patients could obtain sterile maggots from certain hospitals and research centers.Does that mean you can only get sterile maggots from those hospitals and research centers, and that wild maggots are somehow unclean?
