I really think if anyone gets hung up on one topic and digs in their interpretation even with people all around him telling him otherwise, he will never progress in the gospel. The Holy Spirit constantly whispers to us and gives us truth. Line upon line, precept upon precept, and if we think we KNOW the answer, we will never be open to the spirit adding to our understanding. McConkie was wrong. The prophet at the time said so, and McConkie was smart enough to expand his understanding, and correct his book. All I can say, is humble yourself and ask God to give you the answer.
