Rosewood Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 There are a lot of things I know because of years in the church. But now I can't remember the exact authority I heard it from. Which books of the bible are considered scripture and which aren't and WHERE do you find this info? Also which 'lost books' are & aren't. Where is it said that the WOW is now considered a commandment and that 'hot drinks' mean coffee & tea? How about the Lectures on Faith, etc? Anyone know? Quote
BenRaines Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 All the books of the Bible are scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. Both Old and New Testaments. Lost books are names of books that are found in the Bible but not in the compiled scripture. There are other writings that were in the original writings of the Book of Mormon that are not there too. Remember the sealed portion that was not translated. Also the book as compiled by Mormon was only a fraction of all the writing done by the ancient prophets in the New World. I am sure the same can be said of the compilation of the Old and New Testament. They are not all the holy or religious writings of the time they are only a portion. Many people spend a lifetime worrying about the mysteries of heaven and forget the basics. Learn and master the basics. That is what is asked of us. Have Charity. Charity=Pure Love of Christ. Have everything else, knowledge of mysteries, and no Charity and nothing matters. Ben Raines Quote
CrimsonKairos Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 Which books of the bible are considered scripture and which aren't and WHERE do you find this info? There is a note in the manuscript of Joseph Smith's Inspired Translation of the KJV Bible (JST) that says the Song of Solomon is not inspired writing. That's the only one I can think of off the top of my head. Interestingly, the D&C quotes some of the Song of Solomon content (none of the "sexy stuff" though). Compare these: SoS 6:10 and D&C 5:14, D&C 105:31, and D&C 109:73.Also which 'lost books' are & aren't. Are and aren't what? What do you mean by 'lost books'?Where is it said that the WOW is now considered a commandment and that 'hot drinks' mean coffee & tea?Brigham Young proposed that the Word of Wisdom be made a binding commandment on the LDS Church in 1851. It was unanimously approved in that year. It wasn't until the early 1900's that strict adherence to the Word of Wisdom was a requirement for receiving a temple recommend, however. I couldn't find the document on my computer right now that gives specific dates about when obeying the Word of Wisdom was made a requirement for entering the temple. How about the Lectures on Faith, etc? What about them? They aren't part of the official LDS canon of scripture. Some will argue that Joseph Smith didn't write or give them, someone else did. Either way, they are to me inspired writings with valuable teachings. If anyone knows that I am incorrect about any of the above, please post the correction. Quote
Rosewood Posted January 10, 2007 Author Report Posted January 10, 2007 Thank you, the note in the JST is what I needed for that. How about Brigham Youngs statement about the WOW? Do you know where I can find the exact quote? In all my questions, the 'are they or aren't' was in ref to are they scripture? I have several lists of the lost books, but at one time I also had someones (Gen. authority?) statement about which were considered scrip. and whch weren't. For instance the book of Jasher is mentioned in the Bible and we have that book, but the author is unknown so it isn't considered scrip. After being in the church for so long faith promoting rumors and gospel hobbies can creep in. I have an issue with truth. I want exactness. In it there is safety When I was first baptised, I realized many people in Utah had become very lax with doctrine, some drank etc. and all said it was ok because they had 'a good relationship with Heavenly Father' and that 'love' was all that mattered. I'm not concerend about mystries. I'll worry about those when I get revealed truth perfected. Quote
BenRaines Posted January 10, 2007 Report Posted January 10, 2007 Rosewood, are you west of Yosemite or South? Could be East but that would be up by Bishop or Mammoth. I lived in Clovis near Fresno for over 20 years. Mountains near Yosemite could be East of Merced or South of Yosemite like up in Coarsegold or Oakhurst. Ben Raines Quote
Rosewood Posted January 10, 2007 Author Report Posted January 10, 2007 Well howdy neighbor! We live around Bass Lake! I have family in the Clovis 1st & 2nd Wards. Oakhurst is where we spend most of our time; the Hi school and church are there. Very cool. We're getting ready for snow right now, you may be getting some too. Thanks for your comments and thanks for letting me know where you are! Oops! I just noticed you said lived not live. Oh well. Quote
Maureen Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 ...How about Brigham Youngs statement about the WOW? Do you know where I can find the exact quote?Hi Rosewood,Here's some information from wikipedia.com:Young proposed in September 9, 1851 at a General Conference of this denomination that the revelation be adopted as a binding commandment for all Latter-day Saints. Today, adherence to the Word of Wisdom is required for baptism or to receive a Temple Recommend, which allows entry into temples of the LDS Church.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Words_of_WisdomM. Quote

Oh well.and hello from another former neighborhood person. my mother had a house near bass lake for about 20 yrs. i lived there with her for about 3 months before moving onto freso. back then, the only place for gas between freno and coarsegold was the little bar/gas station with the littlo old lady that came out and pumped your gas for you., for about $2 a gallon...double anywhere else. About 5 yrs later, they built the texaco at rd 417, which was the turnoff to my moms house.at that time, the only fast food in Oakhurst was a McD's, and it was brand new.the house was rented out for about 10 yrs after my mother couldnt get up the stairs anymore. house was finally sold about a year ago. Rosewood Posted January 19, 2007 Author Report Posted January 19, 2007 Well for Heavens sake! You lived in Coarsgold. What year was that and were you active at Church because we may have been up here then and it's the same ward. Your mom lived near the Veater ranch. The casino is taking over the area now, which I guess you know. Boy this was off the subject, but fun to know. Thanks, both of you. Quote
